I can't believe what I'm reading and listening to elsewhere, we were much better today, much more direct and just unlucky in the final third.

Who the fuck in there right mind wants us to click in August, we should be clicking properly in November. I'm fine with today, it was incrementally better all round (Rooney scored decent goal).

I will refrain myself from commenting too much. We played better compared to our last 2 epl games but our weakness (up front) is still glaring. I also feel it's time for Herrera to get some playing time.
Playing both Schweinsteiger/carrick and Schneiderlin in the middle gets you ball possession but there's a certain lack of creativity in the final 3rd. I know it's still early days but I don't think we can continue playing Rooney upfront on his own. It just wouldn't work in the long run.

Just the same as last year for me, defense better....3 clean sheets along with midfield been ecxeptionally better which of course helped the defense, but we are still toothless in the final 3rd....Rooney with his back to goal doesn't work. SAF tried it too before, but it doesn't work , he is a # 10 and a # 10 only, he still comes too deep to get on the ball and should be staying upfront where he is supposed to be. Rooney playing behind a main striker is his best position and as soon as he admits it" Mr. Undroppable" is not much good to us. To add to that Mata is too slow to play on the right and from there his decision-making along with every other front player is too slow. We had plenty of counter-attacking situations but chose to run to nowhere(Mata 2nd half running across the back four etc) or pass sideways and back which allows even a mediocre defense such as Newcastle to get back into their two banks of four and make it impossible to break down and Newcastle were unlucky not to catch us on the break at times. We need energy and pace especially on the counter and in attack, everything is so slow and possession-related again that sadly we are lacking this at the moment. The bigger teams will wipe the floor with us on the counter I'm afraid.....

I thought we were crying out for Herrera and Fellaini (gulp) but i can understand Basti getting and needing minutes. Same way Morgan needs bedding in. After all, we are only 3 games in.

Playing both Basti and Morgan in the middle is overkill. I just hope LVG realizes something is not right and get another striker (target man) in before the transfer window shuts while playing herrera in place of Basti. He needs to make the changes early this season and not repeat what he did last season by dropping ADM too late in the season.

I can see Fellaini although suspended making a difference today as we finished the game tossing the ball into Rooney and Hernandez vs six-foot+ defenders like hit and hope stuff...c'mon we are MANUTD and should have more ideas than this upfront....

Just a matter of games and clicking, people have monstrously short memories.

Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin definitely work as a midfield 2. Schweinsteiger is not a holding mid he's more creative, hence why he often took up position further forward today, it was only his first start and as he gets more match fit he'll be more effective even in a 2.
Having said that, my issue isn't the personnel it's the formation. I still can't understand why we've dropped the 4-3-3 that was so successful at the end of last season, I really can't.

exactly. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Spurs, City and Liverpool were outclassed with us playing the 4-3-3 formation... Chelsea included.

Compared to start of last season in which we again only scored 2 goals, yet lost two and drew one. This season won two and drew one, with no goals conceded.
That's a vast improvement on last season, our defence looks as solid as it's ever been under Van Gaal, our off the ball pressing and regaining of possession is brilliant and something that has been lacking for donkeys years. We are performing as team, all players are working together in tandem, on and off the ball.
Going forward it has been lacklustre but compared to the dire showings against spuds and villa, today was an improvement. I really don't know what more people want, Basti/Carrick and Schneiderlins job isn't to create, it's to dominate possession which they've done in all three. We have been lacking in the attacking aspect but we've got a new player in Memphis to bed in, Januzaj in a new role who hasn't had a great deal of game time it's not going to click overnight. They need games together, likewise Rooney and Januzaj need to work up a relationship, the signs are there though.
It's the start of the season, players building up their fitness and match time, some of the stuff I'm reading I mean lets just have some common sense and be realistic.

Yeah you'd think we'd lost all 3 games. 7 points from 9 and 0 goals conceded is hardly cause for panic. Defending is often the most difficult aspect to get right, yet have been absolutely superb so far this season, it gives us a pretty solid base of which to build from. Add to that the quality bolstering of the midfield and we have a rock solid base to build from.
With the number of creative and attacking players we already have the goals will come and on another day we'd have scored 5 and won comfortably today. I'm also almost certain that we will sign another attacker, whether it be a striker or a wide player or just an all round versatile attacker I don't know but as I've said before even if we don't we will make progress on last season, we have the exact same attacking players at the club who played a huge part in that superb run last season.

Wayne has always been a slow starter. Its always taken till october for him to kick on. Bastian once fully fit will be bossing the midfield. Morgan has been quality since he has come in. Depay will keep on improving as he settles into the league. And as fergie said on another day we could have one by 5
