What need is not what we can get in January I'd say.
In the longterm the tasks are:
- competition at RB and long term successor (replace Darmian)
- mid-term replacement for Carrick
- replace Rooney (Griezmann)
- get in a proper winger
- CB situation...future for Jones/Rojo?
- sell Fellaini (TFM already better than him, no signing needed, just sell)
Obviously Griezmann is the one we all want in attack. In midfield we need to replace Carrick over the next 1-2 year. Carrick is still absolute class and making is tick but time is against him. Verratti could one or Saul Niguez. Blind may be the closest to Carrick in the current sqaud. In Defence Laporte and Varane remain the ready made names to be an instant improvement.
None of the business can be done in the upcoming window.
I like the idea of competition at right back. Tony is doing brilliant and can be there for some more seasons. Therefore NOW is a good time introduce his successor to develop behind him. That means no Coleman, who I always wanted, but a youngster with big potential. If that could be Karsdorp, I don't know but certainly business that sounds possible for January.
CB is a position where I am undecided yet, if we should sign. First of all there are Tuanzebe, Williams and TFM possibly developing into that role in the long-term if don't stand in their way. On the other hand we have Mou as manager who doesn't look to youth which he proved so far. Despite Rojo's rise in form I am still not convinced of him and he would the the first of the bunch I'd replace. With the youngsters in mind I'd say we either sign a ready made player that is instantly leading our back being an undisputed starter or we might better be patient with Smalling/Bailly not being a too bad partnership. Lindelöf is linked and could be arealistic target for January but I haven't seen him play. I doubt he fits what I decribed before.
Conclusion is we better wait for the summer to get the quality that really makes us better and look only for slight changes if any in January.
