Well the January window isn't that far off, I'm not convinced new players will change our approach but we live in hope.
LVG has been harping on about creativity and pace so maybe when he gets those he wants we'll see some attacking threat. Though to work in his philosophy he needs players that can beat men and produce a moment of magic with a fuck load of pace.
I think we could with a RB, LCB and a couple of attackers. LB possibly but I don't mind Blind.
In January it's going to be difficult but a RB and at least one attacker should be the priority for me, not sure who on the RB front but attack wise Mane would be a good start until the summer.
- I expect a forward, that's for sure, especially with Wilson gone. Not sure if this will be an out-and-out striker, or more of an attacking winger. Personally, I think Martial is best suited to the left-attacking spot for now. He offers something truly special from that flank and the best I have seen of him, even at Monaco, came from that position. Conversely, Depay has impressed me more upfront than from the "wing". So that brings me to the idea that we need an out-and-out striker more than a "wide attacker".
- I like Darmian from a strictly defending perspective. But I find his attacking contribution way too poor. For me, a right-back is a necessity, just as much as a striker.
I don't think we need more at this point. Although I wouldn't mind a quality CB with the view of offloading one of Jones or Rojo in the summer if they keep picking up so many injuries. It's harsh, because I don't doubt their quality, but I want Smalling to get a proper partner to form the best defence of the league for the next ten years.
But I think LVG's or the next manager's most important choice will come in the summer. We will then perhaps only need one or two good signings, but we may have to axe a couple of players who do not fit in anymore.
I think from an attacking point of view he will either go for Mane or Felipe Anderson, apparently in the summer we tried to get Anderson and he wanted to come but Lazio didn't want to hear anything about it. I think Darmian will come good but he needs very good back up since Valencia is out for a long time, don't know why he doesn't try Varela though or hasn't he impressed in the youth system?
I think if we don't get Mane now he will go for someone better but he would offer us something different and hopefully Rooney gets dropped or a month long injury to show van Gaal that as a team we are better without him in it...
Probably just a striker who can get some goals, Martial is still very young, Rooney is rubbish and Depay isn't a #9.
Aubameyang maybe, he's one of the fastest players around, pretty strong and can ride a challenge which you need in the prem and has a great eye for goal. Mind you his price tag, i really don't want to think about how much he would be, if Mane is any more than 30 mill though we may as well try for aubameyang
Mane would be good provided it is for less than 30 mill, but doesn't seem like a #9 either
My pick is still Saido Berahino though, him and Martial up front is an exciting prospect for the future plus both are very versatile players
I still like Berahino as well. His attitude was terrible in the summer but hey ho, he thinks he's better than West Brom and he may just be right. I think he'll be a little easier to get than he would've been in the summer as well as he isn't starting every game for them, probably due to what happened in the summer. As you say he's versatile, he's quick, he's a good finisher and he's got some unpredictability about him.
Berahino's not exactly prolific though is he, he'd be attainable in Jan but not convinced he's good enough saying that anyone's better than Rooney at the minute.
no.9 for me depends how we see Martial, if he's gonna play wide then we can go all out in the summer for a top striker. Kane hasn't been a one season wonder and Lukaku has been impressive this season, if we're looking for a PL striker I think we can do better.
Berahino is constantly on the move, runs the channels, hassles the defence and he's English. I think he'd be a good versatile attacker for us if Mane is too difficult to get. I agree that if we're looking for a top, out and out number 9 he isn't the answer though. Martial looked superb at 9 when he first came and I'm inclined to still see him as a future 9, when he develops even further physically and mentally.
The key in all this is still getting Rooney out of the side though. I maintain we already have options at the club that are good enough to play some quality attacking football without buying. Take Rooney out of the side and go with a front 3 of Lingard/Memphis/Martial with Mata in behind and I think we'd be golden. The front 3 is full of pace and energy which would give mata the space to weave some magic.
I think he's a talent no doubt but with the way we play, can he create something from nothing with 10 men in front of him. It's the same with Mahrez, the way Leicester set up is perfect for him but can he create without that space, that's for me where Mane has the edge.
I agree that front four would be brilliant, the only thing Rooney has going for him over Mata is strength but if we can move the ball quicker through midfield then that doesn't need to come into play. I'd also like to see Memphis tried upfront up until Christmas maybe and see how he does, then he and Martial can share the load either as a pair or just one and if it doesn't work we can go into the market.
It's all about where he see's Martial, I'm not sure, he started off well but hasn't scored for a while now and is learning that role, it's to be expected but I'm not sure he's a prolific goal scorer. So either a top 9 or 10, Kane can also play that role for me so would give us more options or maybe an experienced 9 who can come in and out and just share the load. I hate to say it but someone like Giroud, shouldn't be a regular first choice but comes in and scores, Pelle wouldn't be a bad option for that but I've heard he wants to go back to Italy.
I only really watch PL football these days and a bit of la Liga but there will be similar type players out there I'm sure.
Dave isn't that guy from Valencia the same as Pelle or Giroud, Paco Alcacer? I think maybe he would be a cheaper and a younger alternative to the PL options. It's all about who he wants to be fair, I think ideally he would like a no. 9 like Suarez or Lewandowski but a few weeks ago he was saying his strikers didn't need to touch the ball a lot to score like Mario Gomez so maybe he may want a poacher.
Personally I see Martial out wide for now. That's where he can influence the game most in this system, at this stage of his development.
I believe we should go for an out-and-out striker. And as surprsing as it may seem, I would consider someone like Lukaku (I don't know who said it earlier, but the "Giroud" profile was spot on imo). He may not be the perfect striker, but he might just be what we need in this system to add another dimension: we badly need some pace, some muscle and power, some strength, someone who is very hard to play in the box, someone to be at the end of those crosses.
I am well aware that Lukaku isn't the best finisher out there, but the more I watch us play, the more I believe he could make a difference. Or at least someone with a similar profile.
Lewandowski would certainly be ideal, but let's stop dreaming, he ain't coming, ever.
If signing players in January hinders our chance of signing better options next summer then I wouldn't sign anyone. We're still good enough to be pushing if not for the top spot then definitely automatic promotion to the CL. But a lot of that does depend on VG and not the players currently at his disposal. I still think Darmian will come good. He started off fantastically but has lost a bit of confidence. Even though we haven't conceded a lot of goals i believe we still need a CB. I don't believe our defence is as good as many think. An injury to Smalling and we could be in deep shit. A proper winger is still needed and someone who can score goals. It sounds like a fantasy wish list but why can't we sign players like Muller, Bale or Hummels?
Cos there are easier, technically better leagues with better places to live than manchester.
BPL doesn't appeal to everybody. Bale grew up here wants a different challenge, madrid has a better climate. easier living. German league is doing just fine thank you very much, German players don't have to come over here now to earn the relative big bucks, they see big crowds, entertaining football, with bags of atmosphere. Why bother moving unless you fancy something different at the end of your career (piggy).
Frankly it's up to VG to get the most out of what he's got and change his style ....but Mane wouldn't go amiss in January.
