He's best as part of a midfield 3 like last season. He's reverted back to that formation a few times late in games recently but there's no signs he's going to start using it from the start. I think he's an all round midfielder, can play anywhere but I agree he's not an archetype of both the attacking mid and central mid positions as of yet.
I just think he makes us tick though, we're a far less creative side when he doesn't play in my opinion.

And the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that Rooney is exactly the type of player we need to make everything work. Even if you don't have Herrera on, Rooney is the type of player to drop into midfield and take on the attack from there, link up with Martial - perfect.
On the bright side, we seem to have nailed down the defensive side which was a big problem last year. And everyone thought we needed to buy defenders, phew. Good job by Jones, who I underestimated, he did great yesterday. Rojo with a comeback after CSKA disaster, and Smalling great as always. The Valencia - Darmian deal did not bother me at all, both of them offer different things but I'd say almost equally good at their jobs.

Rooney has no place in this starting lineup at the minute as far as I'm concerned. I too don't think he's finished completely but he is in terrible form and it's not just his goalscoring. His all round game is sluggish, slow and to the detriment of our attacking play. He's even struggling with making simple 5 yard passes.
The issue is we know the manager isn't going to drop him whether we like it or not so it's how you work round the problem that is Rooney's current atrociousness.

Otamendi was very good but I was surprised Rojo didn't get it. They've waxed lyrical about how good De Bruyne's been and Rojo barely gave him a sniff.

Lone striker is not working period, it's just exacerbating the dip.

He was playing just as bad at number 10 for me though.

No doubt he's having a slump but he looks even worse with his back to goal on his own, and he doesn't necessarily get the balls in and service quickly enough or often enough to make that role function as it should either. There needs to be a rethink in how they supply and support him if they're going to continue down that path.
Easiest way to lighten the load for him is by supporting him quicker and more effectively and feeding him earlier and more often, which means pushing the midfield further up toward him or make them work harder. Question is; is the midfield up to to it, not sure it is for a full 90, week in week out. But it's not like VG won't be looking at all this.

If I may ask how do you support someone who is never close to the box when the attacks start. When he is in no.9 he drops far back to no. 8 role and when he is playing as a 10 he drops as no. 6 so there is never any link at the moment to be honest, his form is ridiculously bad.
I understand that everyone wants to see Rooney play but rather play him wide left or right like against Arsenal and play a wide man like Young or Memphis to balance the wings, I don't see why we should drop Ander. Ander for me is a very good 8 but he can't play there coz we playing a double pivot formation with two 6's and a 10. We will see how it goes going forward, I hope Rooney regains his form somewhat.

Rooney dropping deep to get the ball is the problem, he shouldn't need to do it in the role he's currrently playing, it's the responsibility of those behind him to get up and feed, join and support him. CSKA was a classic example of an isolated lone striker who got no service - and people wondered why he had a quiet game.
It's bad for Rooney, bad for the system they want to play, because he just thinks 'fuck it', I'll drop deep (natural positioning sense) and go and get the ball myself. It's where he's most comfortable which is why I agreed with Hoddle about him playing a 10 role behind lone striker Martial.

Mata is a better # 10, at least now. He should be taking that position rather than Rooney.

In some things, not others; Rooney's goal scoring record is better, he's a lot more physical and direct, gives presence and energy, and slightly quicker. Not as intelligent positioning and sly passing wise, but still not bad. Swings and roundabouts, both could do a slightly different job in that role.

Recent goal scoring record and assists strongly favours Mata. Don't misunderstand me, Rooney is a legend but at the present time he is not living up to his image. If we want what's best for MU, then Mata is the obvious choice.

I would leave mata where he is. Just swap wayne for young and play Martial up front.
