Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel will serve a three-match suspension following an incident during Sunday's meeting with Manchester United.

A statement published by the Football Association today read: "Liverpool's Martin Skrtel will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect after a charge of violent conduct against him was found proven.

"The defender had denied the charge which related to an on-field incident involving Manchester United's David de Gea in the 95th minute of Sunday's game which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"However, an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today found the charge proven."

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has appeared to issue a damning assessment of the Football Association's decision to ban him for three games by posting a picture of clowns on his Instagram account.

Skrtel was suspended adjudged guilty of a stamp on Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea. He and Liverpool have been informed the charge against him was considered 'proven'.

Although the FA have strict guidelines regarding players’ use social media, Skrtel’s response was suitably ambiguous enough to ensure he won’t receive a further charge.

A meeting of the FA's independent panel on Wednesday confirmed the original decision to penalise the 30-year-old, who will now miss forthcoming Premier League games against Arsenal and Newcastle, in addition to an FA Cup quarter-final replay with Blackburn Rovers.

Kenny Dalglish on Steven Gerrard: Reds skipper showed his class by admitting responsibility for his red card

Kop legend Dalglish believes that the Reds skipper will use the red card he earned against Manchester United as extra incentive once his ban is over

Steven Gerrard's immediate apology after his red card against Manchester United was an endorsement of his stature as a man and a human being.

I was at Anfield last week but I didn’t see the incident with Ander Herrera that led to his red card or the tackle on Juan Mata before. We did a presentation to Pele on the pitch at half time.

And by the time I had come back up, had a cup of tea and put my coat on to walk up to my seat I heard all the kerfuffle. I looked up and he was getting sent off.

But Gerrard has been a fantastic statesman for Liverpool and for England as a captain.

And if he makes a mistake he will be the first one to come out and admit it, just as he did last week.

And if he does something brilliant he is the last one to highlight it.

He might use that red card as an extra incentive to do as well as he possibly can once his ban is over.

But I can’t imagine he will need an extra incentive as he doesn’t need anything to make him any more determined to win anything. He has never gone out and not tried to do his best.

Other players sometimes don’t play as well as they could or have in the past. But that is certainly not the case with Gerrard.

If - for whatever reason and God forbid - Gerrard has played his last game for Liverpool the memories are fantastic for the fans.

If he is going to play more games then fine. Maybe the memories are going to get even better.
