Maybe we could do with a thread like this. Mark Ogden writes: Manchester United transfer news: Rafael da Silva facing exit as Louis van Gaal plans clearoutLouis van Gaal has spoken with Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to discuss contract renewals and sales of playersSurplus to requirements: Rafael da Silva could be offloaded soon Photo: PA By Mark Ogden 10:30PM GMT 26 Feb 2015 Manchester United will listen to offers for Rafael da Silva at the end of the season, with Louis van Gaal holding talks with senior figures this week over the Old Trafford futures of a further 10 players. Van Gaal, the United manager, has spoken with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to discuss contract renewals and sales of players, including Rafael, David de Gea, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao. And with Rafael entering the final 12 months of his contract this summer and United maintaining a strong interest in Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne, Van Gaal is ready to sell the 24-year-old, who has not played since the FA Cup third-round win at Yeovil. Rafael’s prospects have diminished with Van Gaal claiming that Paddy McNair could be “the United right-back for the next 10 years” after handing the 19-year-old a new contract earlier this month. Decisions have yet to be made on a number of other first-team players whose contracts expire either this summer or next, however. Michael Carrick, who will be 34 by the start of next season, is expected to be handed a one-year contract before his deal runs out in June, with Ashley Young also expected to earn a new deal to replace the final year of his contract. Falcao is struggling to convince that he merits a permanent move when his loan from Monaco expires in May, while Tom Cleverley, whose contract is up in June, has been told he can leave at the end of his season-long loan at Aston Villa. Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are also entering the final year of their contract, with Evans understood to be most at risk of being sold this summer. Goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard is likely to be sold, while the club will also look to sell Javier Hernandez if Real Madrid decide against making his loan deal permanent at the end of the season. Defender Tyler Blackett has been rewarded for breaking into the first team this season with a new contract tying him to United until June 2017. www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/11438658/Manchester-United-transfer-news-Rafael-da-Silva-facing-exit-as-Louis-van-Gaal-plans-clearout.html

Wouldn't be surprised at all if the mass clear out occurs. van Gaal will know till the summer for sure who fits his future plans, under assumption that he'll be here next season too. Feelings of the fans are something else tho. Who'd you like (or think) will be sold?

Welp. If you replace four with four and start at the back then it looks something like this to me. Let's say Hummels in at CB with one of Jones, Smalling, Evans to make way. VG likes Jones all round bustle and versatility and he likes Smalling's speed, age both on their side. Evans would be the obvious one to go to me. But both Jones and Smalling will be cover to Hummels and Rojo.
We need a decent RB who can comfortably defend and get forward, Rapha is good at one but not the other, so let's say he goes and Clyne or Coleman comes in.
Midfield is the mind fuck area because there are so many variables, the world and his wife wants Pogba but I don't think he'll come here a second time, I think he wants Madrid. So let's say a world class energy freak box to box CM is what's needed then that cuts down the amount of 'creative' type players who like to sit in the hole and operate deeper.
Someone has to go between Mata, Herrera, Rooney - well it ain't Rooney and who's the more versatile and mobile out of Herrera and Mata >> Herrera. So for me Mata goes.
Fellaini is the really weird one, everything tells you he should be for the chop, but I think VG rates him as a specialist bench player and I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed over Mata, believe it or not. ....I wouldn't be too pleased about that tho, I think him and Mata should go.
Forwards is easy for me, Falcao I wouldn't waste the money on unless his price drops considerably and RVP, who I would let go. I don't think he'll get rid of RVP just yet but will let Falcao go. So that leaves a space for a forward, who? Don't know who VG fancies, it's a tricky guess, I know he's always rated Lewandowski but wouldn't be my choice.
If you start adding a right winger into the mix then that's 5 new faces in and it's just too much to bed in at once. I think he'll make do with what we've got for the time being. Ideally I'd like to see Valencia move on but I think that's down the line and there are more important areas to get right first, Young and Valencia can "do a job" there.

Pretty much agree with what Ed has said.
Hummels and Clyne. In terms of a midfielder Schneiderlin seems a no brainer to me, top top player and knows the English game inside out. I'd like to think we'd go for Depay, as well as a striker with pace.
Selling Mata wouldn't be a huge shock but I don't see it being this summer.

We have been linked with so many players I can't keep count, I think for me for fullback its either clyne or danilo rather than Coleman. Hummels for the CB position although I wouldn't be surprised if we get him and Marquinhos or Varane. Then midfield I agree with Dave on Schneiderlin he would solve so many problems for us, being physical, good at interceptions, box to box just a really good all round midfielder. I think he will go for Depay as u say and maybe another winger, the Portuguese papers say he is really interested in Gaitan so it might happen and that would make the team balanced and pacy. I love Falcao but it hasn't worked and he still has a bit of time and a big chance now that VP is injured, but I can see either Lewy or Cavani coming in.

If we go towards 4-3-3, I'm struggling to fit all of them in the first eleven while keeping the big names happy. Rooney, RvP, new striker, di Maria, new winger/wide forward, Herrera, new CM, Blind. That's 8 names trying to fit in 6 positions, while leaving out Wilson, Januzaj, Mata and Carrick, assuming they'll all stay/wont be sent on loan. In a classic 4-3-3 there's no classic wingers and a No.10 so some guys will fall off by default. If we buy Depay (can operate as a winger wide/inside left/right forward, the other would be di Maria I'd imagine so no room for Mata as we're looking for a more pace out wide. The biggest problem is a striker though. Rooney pops up as the only logical answer, so, my issue is the new guy. If we are to buy established first teamer, like Cavani or Lewa, where we play them and where we move Rooney? Or, a pacey forward like Dybala or Lacazette for example who wouldn't settle as a bench warmers too? Buying a back up striker doesn't make sense to me because we'll most probably have RvP and Wilson for that role. The other areas: Fellaini don't have any business in that setup unless he's used as a target man as a plan B like Ed has said and we know that that's part of van Gaal's tactic as a second resort. Ina new midfield he could be an elephant in the room and I don't know how happy he'll be to warm a bench most of the season. Herrera is still a big unknown too. If we buy a loony CM like Vidal or Schneiderlin and with di Maria and Blind already here, where Herrera plays in the first team? Of course, we need someone like those two lads but this most probably means the end for Ander as a starter. I'll stop to make any further mess out of this and just will say that solving one problem pulls another one, moving from position to position and the names involved. I have tried something: but in this team there's no Mata and the new striker for example and fullbacks looks suspect as much as talented, too young and inexperienced. Even with Hummels in, that defense still looks shaky to me. Solutions?

Rotation. There is always going to be players left out whatever formation you are playing, sticking with the diamond then Mata will likely be the fall guy as well. In a 433 ideally the other striker will be capable of playing any of the three forward roles, Rooney could be the no.10 of the three in midfield with any two of Blind, Schneiderlin and Herrera depending on the opposition, Carrick as well of course. Or you push Roo upfront and have Blind, Schneiderlin, Herrera/Mata. Back four sorts it out for itself really, whoever the right back we get if it's Alves, Coleman or Clyne have enough experience. Hummels is a quality player, Rojo is more than capable and Shaw's in it for the long haul. They'll have better protection in front of them. Probably two or all three RVP, Mata and Fellaini will have to go at some point. We may well stick with the diamond and maybe it'd be better if we do: De Gea, Clyne, Hummels, Rojo, Shaw, Blind/Carrick, Schneiderlin, Di Maria, Herrera/Mata, Rooney, New Striker. Lalala who knows, it's going to be a fun summer

How about: Feb 28, 2015 08:03:00 The PSG centre-back says he is happy at the Parc des Princes but nonetheless finds the attention of the Old Tafford outfit flatteringParis Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos admits that he is pleased to learn of Manchester United's interest in him. The centre-back's agent has previously revealed that the Red Devils have been in touch about a possible move to Old Trafford, hinting at further developments in the summer. And while the Brazilian is glad to know that PSG rely on him heavily enough to refuse to negotiate such a transfer, he finds the attention of Louis van Gaal's side flattering. "I'm calm, concentrated. I leave all this to my agent," Marquinhos told L'Equipe. "Before, PSG refused to begin negotiations. They have shut the door. I see this as something to take confidence from.
"It proves PSG count on me but, to be honest, it makes me happy to see Manchester United are interested in me. It's validating."Meanwhile, PSG were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Parc des Princes last week but Marquinhos says the French champions have taken great encouragement out of their performance ahead of the return fixture at Stamford Bridge on March 11. "We produced a good performance but we must keep our feet on the ground," the former Roma starlet added. "We have to score there but it's no worse than that. "We know we can do it, unlike last season, when we were caught between attacking and defending. It's good to go without a guarantee. It's easier to motivate the team. I like this situation." www.goal.com/en/news/11/transfer-zone/2015/02/28/9355302/marquinhos-manchester-united-interest-validatingI don't know where LvG plans to play him (if he buys him) but this lad plays on CB and RB equally good. I remember couple of weeks ago his agent was saying that his client doesn't like to be benched. Well, who does in all honesty? Anyway, if we get both Marquinhos and Hummels (wow), I don't see us going for a right back.

GK: De Gea + Valdes + ? RB: Clyne, Valencia CB: Rojo, Varane, Jones, Smalling, McNair, Blackett LB: Shaw, Young CM: Carrick, Blind, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Kondogbia AM: Di Maria, Januzaj, Depay, De Bruyne, Lingard FW: Rooney, RVP, Wilson
in: Varane and Clyne to bolster the defence, Schneiderlin to play Blind's role with more power, muscle and aggressivity (roation will be needed anyway, keep in mind Carrick's nearing the end too, Kondogbia to have a box-to-box who will finally add the so much needed raw power in the middle, as well as some pace and muscle: a good and tidy player. Depay to have a "special player" in the making who will add pace and dribbling skills and challenge Di Maria. De Bruyne because, trust me, he is on the right track to become a great player, and we don't want to miss it: perfect attitude, great vision, great passing (short and long-range), unbelievable resilience, tidy, great shot with both feet: a great counter-attacker in the making (wasn't so keen on him at first when he was still very young, but now we would be stupid not to move for him as his learning curve is unbelievable)
out: Fellaini (with Kondogbia and Schneiderlin in, Fellaini is a waste of space, Mata (doesn't have enough impact and never will I think), Nani (end of the road), Evans (we must improve our defence and he is the first I'd let go of, followed by Jones the next summer if he doesn't improve), Cleverley, Chicharito. If we can't get 50-60M out of them, Woodwood should hang himself :-)
What have all my signings in common ? - Young age: able to grow together and tie strong bonds to form a great team. Long-term investment, not a quick fix. - Yet vast experience BPL and/or Europe/international stage. - Perfect resilient attitude: no big-name or "star" in there, but players who want to move to the next level and grow. - Great injury record, all of them. Major plus in my books. (The only reason why I would stay away from Hummels). - Profiles we lack in the current crop of players. - Each won't come cheap but not overly expensive either, and with the sale of some players it shouldn't come near to what we paid last summer. - Plenty of fair competition for the players we already have: those names I mention are battlers and won't show the type of attitude Di Maria is showing now for instance. It also allows LVG many possible tactical variations and rotation.

Thought you didn't rate Depay? De Bruyne has never really impressed me but I haven't seen him this season, doesn't he play more central as well.

Indeed, Depay wouldn't be my first choice, but I think we will get him so why bother arguing for someone else ? No to be fair I'd rather we get Son or Dybala. I didn't rate De Bruyne that much either, but he is starting to grow up as a player. He's only 23, so it was a bit unfair of me to judge him too harsh too early. I always thought he was lacking that "cutting edge" to become a truly good player, but I have to say this year he is proving me wrong. But hey there is still no way of knowing if he would adapt to the BPL and to our team. I do know though that he has the resilience that would be much appreciated at OT, and the one that will help him improve with each season. He is also a clever player, very tidy and hard-working, who imo would combine very well with Rooney and Herrera.

Thought you didn't rate Depay? De Bruyne has never really impressed me but I haven't seen him this season, doesn't he play more central as well. Yeah, he was barely used in Chelsea if I remember well so the assessment on him couldn't be fair enough from that time. Plays anywhere across the final third but he's at his best from the center. He's evolved at Wolfsburg very fast, settled immediately and is one of the best players in the league. Also scored a brace in a win over Bayern and had an assist. 8 goals and 12 assist (he leads in that department) really looks impressive. It'll be interesting to see if he can to continue on this level and keeps the high standard, set up by himself. In relation to his potential transfer to United, it's hard to believe that he would be interested in that after just one season in a club that he settled so well. We all know that money talks but not every time necessarily, especially when you're happy enough where you are. I'd add Varane to that assessment as well. I think he sees his future at Real so persuading him to leave could be a mission impossible. When a player arrives in Madrid so young and makes it as a starter, there aren't many places in the world where you'd be happier.
