VAN GAAL: EVEN I AM VERY BORED BY MANCHESTER UNITED.
The Dutchman insists "we can't always play fantastic football" but admits he has not been impressed with his team at times this season Louis van Gaal has admitted to feeling "very bored" and even angry while watching Manchester United play this season. The Dutchman has seemingly survived any short-term threat to his job after a torrid December in which the club fell nine points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. Two good performances against Chelsea and then Swansea City eased the pressure, but another unconvincing performance in the FA Cup third round against Sheffield United - which Van Gaal's team won courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from captain Wayne Rooney - has the spotlight back on the manager's position at Old Trafford. Van Gaal said he had enjoyed watching United at times this season, but said his team's inability to break open opposition defences has left him frustrated and bored. "There are matches that I have enjoyed very much. Against Chelsea I have enjoyed it but the result was 0-0 and we could have lost," Van Gaal told reporters. "There are also matches where I'm very bored or angry because we are not disorganising our opponent's defence, but that is football. "It's not every match that every club is playing fantastically, football that attracts the people. But that is also why the fans are coming. They can criticise but they can also cheer the players. READ MORE | Does Rooney want Mourinho at Man Utd? "They have been ironic [against Sheffield United], but that's also an expression of the fans and that's good. Also the players were frustrated and the fans are frustrated. "You have to know that as a player, as a manager and the fans that we can't always play fantastic football and that was also the case in former days when it didn't happen. I'm sorry about that but it is like that." Van Gaal has also come under fire for not getting off of his seat and encouraging players from the touchline, but the manager said he believed communication through the week was more effective. "I'm not Sir Alex [Ferguson], as you know. Everybody is different and I don't believe in yelling from the sidelines," he said. "I believe in communication during the week, during the preparation and I believe in my players who have to perform." Van Gaal's side travel to Newcastle United on Tuesday as they look to get their Premier League campaign back on track.

It's been the question every game now - is he the right man for United? And I've been going back and forward with this, if he's not the right man - then who is? And if he is - when should we expect a result + a nice performance, because it's already mid-January and we're sitting in 6th. This is starting to look more and more like the Moyes situation, even though we were much worse under Moyes. At least the players are really trying now, but it's still not good enough. Let's not forget that despite the dramatic game it is still Newcastle, who are currently fighting relegation. Don't know what to make of it anymore, the moment we look like there's some improvement we suffer another setback and whether it's the manager or the players - it wouldn't matter if we don't make top 4.

The opposition isn't the issue for me. This league is that way that anyone can cause problems for anyone, as Newcastle have proved already this season. It's the manner that we let points slip against them. Lost the lead twice and let in 3 stupid goals as well as missing 3 golden opportunities ourselves. We can't seem to find a middle ground between being solid and compact defensively and attacking with vigor and pace.
Yesterday was reminiscent of the Leicester game last season. For large parts both those games were as good attacking displays we've seen under LVG. But also 2 of our worst defensive displays. Which also brings me round to the point that we have not improved under him since last season.
I think it's inevitable he leaves at the end of this season and rightly so. I still think whoever takes over will be in a much better position than he was in though...providing we get top 4. Which I think we'll do.

Which also brings me round to the point that we have not improved under him since last season. Can't argue with that, like you said in the other thread the "make it to top 4" was for last season, we were supposed to be fighting for the title this one. And I might be harsh but it seems like we're playing worse than we did last season. The 352 and 4141 were a lot more fluid last season, the thing that bugged the shit out of me yesterday was apart from all our passing efforts, the players barely moved from their positions, which makes the next moves just way too predictable

On a side note to the people complaining about it: Van Gaal was on the sideline yesterday, giving instructions to the team. Please explain to me what difference did it make.

No difference to the final result, but his animation at least showed that he is actually passionate for a change instead of his gormless scribbling we have been seeing thus far.

VAN GAAL REACTS TO DRAW AT NEWCASTLE Louis van Gaal admits Manchester United “threw away” two points after Newcastle United twice fought back to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw at St James’ Park on Tuesday. Speaking to BT Sport and MUTV afterwards, the manager gave his honest reaction and analysis… ANALYSIS OF THE RESULT “We threw it away. You have to finish the game much earlier. The referee gave a penalty and I think it was a duel - I have seen the video and you can see Mitrovic was pushing the head of Smalling. When you both do that you cannot decide which is worse, I think, but the referee did not lose our game. We lost it by ourselves.” ON UNITED'S PENALTY “When you want to avoid the header of Fellaini by putting your hands to the ball... it is not ball to hand, it is the hand to the ball and Fellaini cannot head it that way. I don’t think it is a discussion, but okay you never know in this world. You can always have a discussion.” MORE ON THE PERFORMANCE “We were unlucky, when you see the penalty for the second goal and when you see the third goal. When the ball is going where he [Paul Dummett] shot then it is in the hands of De Gea. It clipped off Smalling and that took it past. It was unlucky. Before that we were running behind and you have to push forward, you have to push the ball under pressure and we didn’t do that. Then you get these kinds of things.” DID THE PLAYERS GIVE EVERYTHING HE ASKED? “They have to finish of course but it is always difficult. Rooney also had a very big chance in the first half. We could have scored six goals here, I think, there were big possibilities so when you then lose two points then that is very sad. Also, everybody knows it is our own fault. It was not the referee or the opponent. We did it ourselves.” NEXT UP, LIVERPOOL! “It is a very big game for Manchester United but also for Liverpool. Now, I am still with my mind on this game and that is not such a happy ending.”
