LVG was a likeable man and a great character so it's unfortunate that it hasn't worked out but the decision was inevitable. Wish him all the best in his retirement and thanks for the FA Cup.

Echo your sentiments Dave. Really loved him as a character and think he definitely had the mentality you want from a Manchester United manager. Unfortunately the standard of football hasn't quite followed and I believe the right decision has been made. Thanks for the FA cup and enjoy your retirement.

It was time for him to go. It's bittersweet though, because it's not like he didn't achieve anything while he was here, but unfortunately it wasn't good enough for us.

Supposedly Woodward personally told him last night and the delay in announcement is down to Louis wanting time to pack his bags and get going to Portugal. Probably to avoid any media attention which is understandable. Just happy we've all left on good terms in the end. Time to look forward now.

LVG the manager we can all do without, but the man was very interesting. I'd have loved for it to work out, but it didn't and now is the time to look forward.
Thank you for the FA Cup, and some of those outstanding moments of individual brilliance. Best of luck in whatever follows.

Good Bye and good luck to you Louis, happy retirement and good health Thanks for the FA cup, for bringing Martial to old Trafford and for your press conferences You left a few gems behind you: Football is now horny Rooney is the best captain you have ever managed in your long and decorated career "I would also like to express my gratitude to the amazing United supporters. They are truly the best fans in the world" ............. well you got that right Most of all - you were a breath of fresh air after Moyes ............... Yes expectations were high and for the first season it looked promising.... but it never clicked in the second term Now I'm waiting for some autobiographies to be released to hopefully have a better insight into the dressing room and his man management - He preached the total human being approach but did it really happen??

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/38645667LVG retires. “The last six months at United, the circumstances, were so difficult,” he said at a conference in Holland. “That is why the trophy I won, the FA Cup, I consider the biggest trophy in my career". "Going to the absolute climax of the FA Cup Final, ending with ten men and having to score to win In extra-time. Having gone through all that, and then walking away with the trophy, was incredible for me".

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41212800LVG: United went behind my back "They told me only after it was leaked out, it was the biggest disappointment of my life," "United put my head in a noose and I was publicly placed on the gallows." "The pressure was enormous with my head in the noose and they went right behind my back," said Van Gaal. "I think it was all orchestrated like a film and it was done very much behind my back right from January." "United did not discuss this with me. If they had come to me with the Mourinho plan then I could have said 'OK, let's give it everything for the last six months, complete commitment to each other and the team and then Jose Mourinho can take over'," he added. "They could have saved the last year of my salary by doing that but after what happened I made them pay every penny." Fair comments and yeah not great from United.
