Maybe that's why we don't play with a lot of coercion. Does anybody have a clue what he's talking about? Doesn't bode that well for Herrera if he prefers a second striker rather than a third midfielder. Pedro would fit the bill perfectly. I suppose we can't keep harping on about Herrera because even though he was one of our players of the season last season we now have a lot more quality and someone has to miss out. Hopefully he'll get his fair share of games because he is a class player.

Interesting on Strootman, maybe we now have that player in Schneiderlin and he could play Mata and Herrera with those, who knows.
Yeah given up trying to interpret Van Gaal as well, I think it's clear though he prefers a second striker but Herrera could win him round, needs to add goals to his game. I don't think we'll see Mata central though but I don't mind him wide, he'll probably switch depending on the opposition.
Memphis may well grow into that role, it's early days yet, I can see us back in the market for Bale next summer and he'd be perfect for it.
Herrera's one of my favourite players but as you say there's much more quality in the squad now and one or two quality players are going to be left out. Plenty of games to go around mind.

Really don't know what to think about that video. Some could say he overly complicated things, some could say his arrogance is there for all to see, some could say he's always looking for excuses when things go wrong, some could say his preparation is second to none, some could say he lives for football. The man is an enigma. Could you imagine SAF talking about tactics? "Keano, aye you lad. Hit dat fookin ball oot ta giggs" "Giggs. Run doon dat fookin wing and cross da ball ta Rudd" "Rudd. Stick it in the fookin net"

That entire methodology, the attention to detail and prep is what the Glazers are buying because even when VG leaves he'll leave all that methodology and state of the art equipment behind for whoever to step into and run with. Whether it be Giggs or Klopp, everything will be in place and the backbone of the club will tick a certain way. The club has been willingly dragged into the modern era and cutting edge ways of doing things.

I can understand his position till the window shuts, if he's not a 100% and distracted then fair enough at least he's honest about it.
Be funny as fuck if Perez leaves him hanging out to dry here for the season and he has to knuckle down.

One successful manager to another. Van Gaal as the manager of Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern and United and Stoichkov as the former manager of Celta Vigo, Mamelodi Sundowns and Litex Lovech Are you a fan of your fellow countryman Stoichkov Jie? He was the most talented striker the country's ever had, he got us 4th place in '94 WC, but he's a selfish, egotistical bastard with the intelect of a 4 year old

Stoichkov, letchkov, kostadinov , balakov were all great players. I can still remember vividly the match against Germany in the quarters which had lothar mattheus and rudi voller in it. You guys owned them. One of my fav wcup game.

Yeah I got the same feeling from what he said (or didn't say). I think there's some credence to the rumours we'll wait til after the Spanish super cup to confirm it.

Mitten: Smalling leads a much improved defence. www.espnfc.com/club/manchester-united/360/blog/post/2572586/man-united-defensive-improvement-led-by-chris-smallingGood read, the back four have been very impressive so far season and even last season but the problem is keeping everyone fit. Smalling has come on leaps and bounds under LVG, on the ball he's not pretty but that's where Blind comes in. Blind has been brilliant so far, he didn't get ripped apart by the mighty Harry Kane, he didn't get out muscled by a 6ft odd Gestede or the striker of Brugge, he's come through all the tests so far with flying colours yet people seem to be awaiting the moment he makes a mistake with glee or Smalling is holding his hand which is utter nonsense. Going forward he is a great asset with his on the ball qualities something that Otamendi lacks. Tougher tests will come of course but Blinds done well so far and he continues like this and Rojo once fully fit is going to find him a hard man to displace. Darmian has settled in well and it looks like we've finally sorted that right back slot with someone who knows the jobs required, needs work going forward but I'd rather have someone with the defensive nouse first and foremost. Shaw looks much fitter and sharper, it's like having a new player, he's been able to finish 90 minutes in succession with no worries and the relationship he can build with Memphis is a promising one. Long may it continue.

The issue now with Blind is everyone is waiting for him to be shown up, so when he does make a costly error people will jump on the "I told you so!" bandwagon ignoring how well he's played previous. He's been very impressive so far and deserves his place in that defence. It should stay unchanged for the foreseeable future, injury permitting.

From the Guardian's '10 things to watch this weekend'
By using Daley Blind as a centre-half this season Louis van Gaal risked ridicule. Many critics expected a big-name defender to be brought in but instead in United’s three games so far he has chosen to use a utility player who is neither tall nor blessed with electric pace. But Blind has appeared comfortable, using intelligent positioning and anticipation to get out of awkward situations. Perhaps that shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s not often teams play with two big strikers up front any more.
Providing a side has one big centre-back and other tall players to pick up on set pieces, a smaller, ball-playing centre-back can be protected and prove invaluable when building play from deep. “You can no longer deploy the old-fashioned, solid type of defender in these positions,” Van Gaal said of centre-backs in the 1997 book The Coaching Philosophies of Louis Van Gaal and the Ajax Coaches.
“You have to use technically and tactically gifted players.” This line of thinking more than anything perhaps explains why Nicolás Otamendi is checking in at Manchester City and not United. Maybe the tactically astute playmaking centre-back that Van Gaal dreams of simply isn’t out there. If Blind performs well again against Newcastle maybe there won’t be a rush to bring in another defender before the transfer window shuts. Gregg Bakowski
