Well it all depends what the overall shape of what he wants looks like - and the ego of the club owners. And that's the million dollar question that only a handful of people know, init. lol.
If he decides it's a dedicated 433 then you might as well build a specific side to do that if the owners are backing him. In which case he'll start at the back and have a proper back four with proper defenders capable of defending, ball play and attacking. So Shaw and Clyne LB and RB would be starters and so would Hummels and possibly Rojo. The signing of Hummels, in particular, allows him go 3 at the back secure in the knowledge that he knows that Hummels can run that particular show.
The 3-3 under LVG could technically be made up of any combination that fits and works. And no doubt that's all in his head at the moment, the permutations are endless, you could make a case for just about anything and still be a million miles off with VG. I've argued for the conservative approach of 3 incoming, but I'm not sure you'll end up with that with a dedicated RB, and I'm up to four with Hummels, Clyne, CM and Depay.
Also bare in mind VG' biggest recent moan is that there isn't enough height in the side - which sends you down a completely different path altogether.
Answer = I don't know. :lol:

I think recent weeks have made it more definitive. He's found the setup that suits, it's all about tuning it now. We've even got Ashley Young keeping one of the best players in the league/world out of the side because he's suiting the system better. If that doesn't show that van Gaal is relatively happy then nothing ever will.
Anything in that tuning that involved Rooney in any midfield role is the wrong move for me. Maybe it's more hope than expectation seeing as the rumours won't go away, but a striker, particularly a big name one demanding a starring role seems pointless to me.

Makes sense what Marc's saying, we already have RVP and I'd love to see more of Wilson, so we don't necessarily need anyone there, better focus on midfield

Adding a striker who would be a first choice and expensive one at that would be feasible only if he plays equally good across the final third. Out of those I've watched this season a lot, Lacazette, Dybala and Vietto are fitting the bill.

Rooney's best position in that new system is upfront, simple as that! Why disturb that balance? Good if he can help us out in cm when needed, but that's not his role. What LVG should do imo is buying a player able to operate on the wings or upfront to cover for Rooney/RVP when needed. And Depay could be just that man. I don't think RVP will leave. He has at least one more season with us.

Yeah, I wouldn't rule out RVP just yet as well. He's been unlucky with injuries this season, but he might be the surprise comeback next season

Exactly, I wouldn't write of RVP just yet either. When he was fit this season he was always a threat and scored 10 with 3 assists, not bad far half a season injured or not 100% combined.

And the picture that they all conveniently ignore is one took a title winning side full of confidence and ground it into the dust. The other had to pick up those pieces and rebuild it from fucking scratch, integrate a host of new players while weeding out the existing squad, implement a new playing regime and a raft of other changes.
A straight comparison like that doesn't tell the half of it.

It's always like that for them, just black or just white, there's almost never something in between. Many are still running with the same shit that playing Rooney up front solely turned our season around.

They just want to knock us always, just goes to show their inferiority complex when it comes to us.
