It's beginning to look like LVG is taking the not what I do now, but what I leave when I'm gone stance by playing so many youngsters in a crucial game. It's almost as if he was blooding them now for the future and not even thinking about the present with his subs tonight. If he succeeds and we are dominant in the future we will probably look back at tonight and laugh, but for now it hurts so I hope he can keep his promises.

His substitutions didn't bother me. Jackson did well, Carrick was a no brainer and Powell has supposedly looked as good as ever in training. He's a big guy as well with a fierce right foot. We were looking for anything at that stage. Mata had faded completely by that point as well, back to looking too weak and too slow.

But seriously, I had no problem with the youngsters whatsoever, Jackson did a couple stupid things, but he also had a couple good ones going forward. For a kid that's played only 10-20 minutes before that match, I'd say he did pretty well. Varela was great. Powell showed some nice things too, but he barely had enough time to showcase anything

We threw everything at it but what we had just didn't cut it.
Started the match well, our attack caused them problems all night but when you concede 3 or so minutes after you score your in trouble, Smalling top class performer of the season losing his man at the corner. The second goal was far too easy, Schweinsteiger at fault and had a torrid time all night, poor showing from him.
We managed to get an equaliser and again straight after concede from another set piece, people again not doing their jobs.
Performances in the competition as a whole have been dissapointing from us, not good enough right the way through and this group Wolfsburg aside should have been a cake walk. English teams on a whole haven't been good enough either, just shows how standards have fallen in the last few years.

I blame Rooney. Everyone wanted him to pick up a knock and he decided to take half of the squad with him. Selfish twat.

It's funny because most people will be angry with this game, when in fact it was one of our best games considering the injuries. Any team suffering from the same amount of injuries among first team players would have struggled massively. Yet Wolfsburg were not comfortable at all. We showed more attacking intent and a willingness to score that we haven't seen much this season.
That being said, I find our attacking firepower ridiculously weak and toothless: only Martial, when playing out wide on the left, is the quality you could expect. Lingard and Memphis are growing nicely, but it's not normal that we haven't got a couple of elite players upfront. And no, Rooney is no longer an elite player.
I think this season will be a major waste unless LVG finally shows he has some big balls and bring in quality as soon as January, at the very expand of Wayne Rooney. I am not saying you can't trust kids, all I am saying is that we can't play a 21-y.o. front-3 and expect miracles. I think every other department is well covered, but our attacking force is a joke. It would moreover benefit our youger players to play alongside more experienced ones. The problem is that our senior figures aren't at the top of their game: Mata, Rooney, even Young haven't been good enough this season.
What frustrates me is that we could and should have anticipated that in the summer. LVG should have known better, and he was either stupidly naive or stupidly arrogant, but it was stupidity in every case. And that I do not forgive him. This season can still be saved and be interesting and entertaining, even in the Europa League. But for Fuck sake I wish that for once we could have a complete team. We have finally got a proper CM, a solid defence after Rio/Vidic, but now we have no world class striker left. The after-SAF rebuilding is becoming too long now. It's time to put that rebuilding behind us and move toward conquering. No excuses anymore.

I blame ISIS. If it wasn't for the Paris attacks, Martial wouldn't be traumatized and would have scored at least 5 tonight.

I agree Matt. We could all see in the summer we were light of a top class experienced attacker. I know Falcao and RVP were past it and quite frankly I'm glad we sold them but the fact he signed Falcao showed he valued experience in attack. Yet this season he got rid of everyone and replaced them with youngsters (albeit very talented ones). I know we made moves for various players and failed, Muller, Bale, Ronaldo were all talked about and I have no doubt we enquired but where was the plan B if we failed to attract one of the absolute elite?
Not even looking at strikers I'm thinking just a more experienced attacker in general. I know Pedro hasn't set Chelsea alight but I think he'd have made such a difference to this side now, not as a powerhouse striker that I still think we may need in time but as a top class experienced attacking player. Why we pulled out of signing him is still beyond me when we're so light of proven quality in that area of the pitch.
The young players are trying and they're trying hard, eventually they'll get there but as you say they're under so much pressure to perform and it isn't fair on them to expect it week in week out. It's all very new to all 3 of them.

Had my say on the attack issue already. Tonight is nothing more than a moral victory. If we'd played like that in all the group games we'd have been through long before tonight. Can't understand why it took a must win game like tonight to see the shackles taken off our attack a bit more. Hell if we played with that intensity in our league games we'd be clear of the chasing pack in it too.
Wolfsburg away was never going be easy and we shouldn't have put ourselves in that position in the first place.
Nobody's saying we would have won the Champions League but it was an ideal opportunity to pit ourselves against the better teams in the competition too see exactly how far we've come under van Gaal. Are there any great shakes in it other than Bayern or Barca??
I hope van Gaal's eyes have been opened up by this performance and its not another false dawn. Ironically it was our much talked about defense that let us down tonight but on another day/night we could have won it just as easily. The defence can't play as badly again can they?? especially at set pieces?? surely not
I don't know how seriously we are going to take the Europa League now. If we do, it could hinder our league aspirations. I just hope van Gaal doesn't now blow the opportunity our rivals seem to be handing to us in the Prem. Play with that intensity in the league and we should be beating most teams
Losing at home in the cup to Boro and failing to get out of this group is simply unacceptable for United, but the damage was done well before tonight.

With the depleted defence, attack may literally be our best form of defence right now.

Van Gaal's verdict on Wolfsburg defeat
Louis van Gaal shared his thoughts on Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 away defeat to Wolfsburg and resulting elimination from the Champions League when he spoke to the media after the match.
Here are the manager's key comments from his post-match interview with BT Sport and press conference...
Overall reflection "I think it is a crazy match. We scored the goals, then they are cancelling [out our] goals. Still we had chances, but they have also chances. When we scored, they scored after two minutes again. Also the winning goal was two minutes after we had equalised, so we had the chance to win I think. We fought for the win, but with ten men at the end [after injuries] we couldn't do more than what we have done."
Was there a lack of concentration? "That is strange, okay it happens also in Eindhoven when CSKA Moscow were scoring and within ten minutes PSV were taking the lead, so that's football."
Should a team of United's stature be knocked out so early? "No, you can say that we were the favourites, but we were in a very tight group, and all the results are like that. It is always 1-0 or 2-1. You remember the first match against PSV when there were decisions of the referee, and also in this game, decisions of the referee that were not positive for us. When it is a tight group it can happen."
Lingard's goal disallowed for offside "When you see that as a linesman then you are very good. When you firstly give the goal and then when a few players come and say to you, you change your mind, it is strange in my opinion. I don't think that the goalkeeper was interfered by Mata, because the ball is turning in the goal. So I don't think he can reach that ball. Of course he [the goalkeeper] sees Mata in an offside position and he takes the benefit of that, criticising the referee."
On going into the Europa League "I haven't thought about that at this moment. I am very disappointed, the players are very disappointed. This is the league where we wanted to show our qualities, and we cannot do that anymore."
How damaging is this defeat to the work you are trying to do? "You don’t know that [how much damage this result does] because when you see the circumstances in which we have to play the match, with a lot of injuries and in the last 15 minutes we had to play with 10 players, you have to analyse that also. The circumstances were not very good for Manchester United to play this game, but that’s difficult to understand because the fans and the players but also the manager want to win every game. It’s not like that - in sport you can lose also. Of course it’s a step backwards but you have seen today also a lot of youngsters who played very well in my opinion."
Schweinsteiger's performance and substitution "I have changed [replaced] him and I don't change players for nothing. Then I think I can do it with other players better. We are all human beings and also Bastian is a human being, and he wants to play at the highest level and certainly in Germany to show his qualities. I cannot say that he was the Schweinsteiger from my period in Munich today."
How much progress has there been at United? "At the moment, I cannot defend myself because we are out of the Champions League and every word I say is a wrong word, I think. When you see the facts, we were further in the Capital One Cup, we qualified for the Champions League group; we have played all these matches and are still in a very good position in the league. The facts are saying that we are better than last year, so that’s my answer because I can only give facts. I’m disappointed that we’re out of the Champions League, of course."
