Not enough time to dwell too much on last night's disappointing result and performance. A top of the table clash awaits! Need to pay them back after the disaster here last season. In terms of the team, one of the things I was most surprised with about the PSV game was how poor the midfield pairing were, particularly in the 2nd half. I've never seen Schneiderlin as sloppy in my life and the lack of intent and speed in our attacking play was in part caused by how slow we were in midfield. I don't know what Herrera's injury situation is but if he's fit he has to start in midfield for me, preferably as part of a 4-3-3 with Schneiderlin holding and Schweinsteiger alongside, I'd even be willing to sacrifice Schweinsteiger and play Rooney deeper seems we're still having to accommodate him. If not a 4-3-3 he has to pair him with Schneiderlin. In terms of attack I'd be tempted to move things around. Martial has plateaued which was to be expected, he's not offering much at 9 at the minute, whereas Memphis was very good against Watford at 9 and despite being bang average again out on the left last night I think he deserves another shot up front against Leicester. Lingard is a guaranteed starter and Mata should be brought back into the lineup. Ideally I'd drop Rooney, play a front 6 of: Schneiderlin Herrera Schweinsteiger Mata Memphis Lingard But seems both the 4-3-3 and the dropping of Rooney are incredibly unlikely I'd go with: Schneiderlin Herrera Mata Rooney Lingard Memphis

For me our only guaranteed starter in attack right now should be Lingard. He's missing chances but the fact is he's getting into positions and making things happen. I've said it before that the best thing about him is he's always looking forward, of course it can lead to him losing possession sometimes but more often than not he's successful in what he wants to do. Just lacking a bit of composure in front of goal at the minute but that will come, he's never lacked composure at other levels. Got to remember he's only been in the team for the last 9 matches and has performed better than anyone since getting into the team.

Maybe we need to refresh the line up but we don't have many options at the minute.
Martial is still learning that no.9 role that you can see, the more games he gets the better and when he's on the pitch at least he tries to make something happen. He was a little unlucky with his finishing yesterday. Lingard deserves his place, excellent first half and Memphis another run after his performance against Watford but he needs to put in a shift going the other way.
I think dropping Rooney and bringing Mata in through the middle would solve a lot of our problems, if only he had the flu a few more weeks. I still don't know what he contributed to last night apart from screaming at everyone except himself seemingly.

As for the midfield, that's down to LVG. He's got to give one of them more freedom or else the attacking play won't improve.

In his presser he commented that the 2 in midfield were always too deep in the 2nd half, which again tells me that the way the team plays isn't completely down to him. I think they try too hard to adhere to the possession side of the game which he preaches, which in turn makes them a little anxious about giving it away meaning they don't take risks often enough. He's also commented in the past himself that our play is sometimes too safe and that we haven't taken enough risks.
We just can't seem to find that middle ground of keeping possession and the risk taking required to create more chances and score goals, or at least it isn't happening enough. What is down to him is getting it right though. If the players aren't capable of playing the way he wants often enough he has to tweak his approach.

As for Martial I think he and Memphis need to share the load. When both are on the field you have 2 very inexperienced premier league players still adjusting to life in a new country at one of the best clubs in the world and in one of the most difficult leagues in the world.
I think Matt commented in the PSV thread something similar about our attack lacking quality experience and I think he's right. Rooney should be the one providing this but he's diluting his experience by being fucking shit. Mata is experienced but he's not someone who takes the game by the scruff of the neck and effects it for 90 minutes, he floats in and out of games with a few quality touches. Other than that you've got Lingard who is also inexperienced at this level but has been brought up at the club and is a local lad, so he's not having to adjust too much.
Stick a Muller or a Lewandowski in this side with the likes of Mata, Martial, Memphis dotted around him and I think we'd be destroying teams on a regular basis.

We need to win, Memphis did well against Watford but Leicester are no mugs and Martial simply is more of a threat. Or go the same system as Watford but with those two upfront, Martial's got to play.
For the life of me though he just has to drop Rooney, a front four of Lingard, Mata, Martial, Memphis. Hard work, quality, undpredictability and pace.

Don't think it matters what team he puts out, we're still going to see the same shit. Through injuries or for other reasons players have had their chance in attack but our style hasn't changed one iota. So against PSV his excuse was because the midfield 2 were playing too deep, well get off your fucking arse and push them up you dumb cunt. My hate for the man has turned into loathing. The sooner Giggs takes control the better.

I have to admit that I love Rooney for years, but can't disagree with Dave here.We seemed to be more of a threat going forward nowadays without him.

De Gea Darmian - Smalling - Blind - Rojo Schneiderlin - Schweinsteiger Lingard - Rooney - Martial Depay I would have Martial out wide: much more composed and mature than Depay for that position. But I like Depay's profile upfront, so I would just switch them. I would have left Rooney out, but we know it's not happening, although everyone knows it's costing the team.

The team pretty much picks itself now then. Young back at left back with Darmian at right back. Mata, Rooney, Martial, Memphis in attack. Still have enough to beat them if we're on form but the injuries piling up are a worry for this time of year.

Our impressive defensive record is the only thing that's making me feel a bit more comfortable with the entire game, hope we have learned our lesson after the PSV game and we show up for this one. The injuries are really limiting our options, but we've gone through worse last season so no excuses today.
