The only other option i can think of is mcnair in the holding role But think it would be too much to ask against a team like chelsea

Also they might not exploit it if they go with a defensive side.

There's room for him in the land of TR, someone suggested playing Young in the holding role so that'd free up some room. The salt in the wound though was someone actually agreeing with the suggestion But that's suicide! Last time I've been there and it was ages ago I've picked up some unnamed disease, took me a while to cure it. Still don't know what it was... Anyway, I think it's not di Maria who is the real problem here even with all his antics this season, it's rather those around him who should provide balance to the team, similar to that he had at Real last year. Whether we have that is questionable, for example, could Herrera grow into the holding role. I can't see it myself right now but could be wrong. The only logical answer is Rooney, with all his flaws, first touch as the most concerning one.

What both managers have to say: *Note: Mourinho squeezing his teeth while listening the questions.

Mcnair isn't ready for that kind of role yet for me, especially against a top side.
There's nobody we have that can replace Carrick properly, Blind is close to the style of play but nowhere near his standard yet, plus he's obviously injured. Other than that the other midfielders aren't really like for like replacements for Carrick. I guess you could put Herrera further back and play Di Maria in central midfield but Herrera doesn't have the defensive discipline. We know Rooney will stay disciplined and do a job, that's why he's the sensible option.

No way in hell he's the answer there, he'd be crucified by the likes of Matić, Fabregas, Ramires or Oscar. The only position for him is at CB. Even if they go with a defensive side, the middle of the pitch is where you win or lose your battle. With Paddy as the very small fish in the very big pond there, you can bet your life that Jose will expose that, whatever his setup is.

Think that's how it'll pan out Rooney and Herrera pulled back, think it'll be compact with Young tucking in helping and ADM for width and RVP up front (Mata in behind).

Our striker for this match will have a big role to play as well, whether RvP or Falcao. I'm thinking on those movements and dragging their centerbacks out of Fellaini-Herrera_di Maria-Young, something like what Rooney was doing against City last week. I'd rather start RvP too if he's fully match fit, but no problem with either of them as long as they execute the instructions. Wilson has a better legs than both of them but he doesn't have the experience for this kind of match and with that particular role to play.

Fuck it. I'd put Fellaini up front, Mata in behind, ADM left / right switching width. Young, Herrera. Rooney sat deeeper.

Fellaini's definitely an option. My only worry there is it'll make our defenders more inclined to just lump the ball long to him. I think Terry and Cahill will deal pretty comfortably with that sort of football.

De Gea Valencia - Smalling - Blackett - Young Herrera - Rooney Mata - Fellaini - Di Maria RVP But this just show how we just can't afford not to sign a quality CM and CB this summer.

To be fair when falcao came on against city he did seem very hungry. Put in a very good shift even though he was only on the pitch for a short time

Falcao to play Roo's position. Roo to sit in midfield. Push Young to leftback. Bring in Di Maria on the left and play Paddy McNair as a centreback.
Let's see what Falcao and Di Maria can bring to the team. It's their chance to shine now.

Interestingly some people in another forum has mentioned Timothy Fosu-Mensah. I don't watch U18s, is this guy is good enough and ready for the first team?

You don't remember him having Fabregas, Hazard and Messi in his pocked recently do you? The lad possess bags of energy and could run around for a whole week like a headless chicken without stopping once, so he is the solution obviously.
