Marc who would you go for as a striker then? I wouldn't. I want us to stick with 4-3-3, van Gaal doesn't drop his captain therefore I expect Rooney to play 45-50 games next season with the vast majority of them at No.9. I don't want to see him in midfield too often. I also don't expect van Persie to leave, Rooney/van Persie/Wilson is more than enough for that one spot. Plus there are the likes of Fellaini, likely Depay and even Januzaj who've all played up front in the past. Worst case scenario try Rashford or someone out. Ings, or any other striker, would do nothing but bloat a position that doesn't need it. It may be a decent piece of business from a money point of view but I don't there is any footballing logic to it. My ideal world would look something like this come August... De Gea/Valdes Carvajal/Valencia -- Smalling/Jones -- Hummels/Rojo -- Shaw/Blind Carrick/Blind Herrera/Pereira --- Pogba/Fellaini Mata/Depay -- Rooney/van Persie -- Di Maria/Young Plus other squad players dotted around, then maybe try for Javi Martinez next summer as Carrick's replacement. If we couldn't get someone of Carvajal's quality then Valencia/Rafael is fine by me, any more than 3 or 4 signings at this point feels like overkill.

I'd be quite happy to go with that next season as well.
Say though both Falcao and RVP go, who'd you go for then, kind of reminds me of Chelsea's options getting Remy dirt cheap. Ings providing cover, I'm in two minds over him. I want to see more of Wilson really, Ings would provide competition whilst not too much to hold him back. Is that good enough for us though, probably not.
I think if Strootman can get back fit and to his best he'll eventually replace Carrick, don't think that love affair is over just yet but Martinez would be great,

I'm still not 100% sure one would be needed, I suppose it depends how much trust van Gaal has in Wilson. There's even the option of keeping Hernandez, something I'm not really in favour of but wouldn't be all that different to taking a punt on Ings in my opinion.
I think we'd still be covered, as I said Rooney will play the vast majority of games, others can fill in if and when they're needed. Depay played as a striker in van Gaal's World Cup system and seeing as he wouldn't be first choice on the wings straight away, can be second choice striker at the same time.

Yeah have to say I'd be delighted to start the season with Marc's squad above.

Assuming he recovers completely and we bring him in, he'll most probably take Fellaini's place, or, we'll adjust our center to accommodate him. Same with Pogba. If we're looking for a player with similar attributes as Carrick, Gundogan is a better solution as a deep-lying playmaker. He'd be perfect actually for Carrick's role in the team. I don't think either that van Persie will leave. With Clyne I'm not convinced and didn't see enough of Ings to form an opinion.

As long as we have a second player at RB I'd be fine, I've been sweating at the thought of Valencia getting an injury. It doesn't seem right now as Rafael would be staying and even if he is, would he be first team quality? Although, with the way Van Gaal's resurrecting players I won't be surprised if he gets Rafael to his best shape and brings back Cleverley and turns him into the second Scholes  www.express.co.uk/sport/football/570669/Man-Utd-Louis-Van-Gaal-Nani-Javier-Hernandez-Tom-Cleverley

Fine by me.

any more than 3 or 4 signings at this point feels like overkill I completely agree. What's important for LVG now is to add quality, not bodies. The system is taking shape, the players are adjusting and responding well to LVG's demands. Like you, I believe that our massive investment this summer should be Pogba. Get him, a quality CB like Hummels, Depay to compete with Young/Di Maria/Mata, perhaps a young right back if Rafael is to leave (Clyne on a cheap, or Carvajal to join our Spanish community), and we're all set for next season imo.

I agree that any more than ~3 squad additions would be overkill, but we'd also need to replace any outgoing players. Our squad is too thin for a title challenge, European campaign, and cup run. We need about 3 new faces, but then we also need to replace any outgoing players. So it could be substantially more than 3 new signings.

Yeah agree with whats being said, central defender, central midfielder and a winger are priority signings regardless. If RVP and Falcao go we'll need another striker for me, if Rafa leaves we'll need another right back to provide competition for Tony. There's also the possibility that someone like Di Maria leaves, I don't think he will and don't think we should sell him either as I'm expecting more from him next season but PSG may come sniffing.
Going to be a very interesting summer.
