Memphis Depay

Willems is the second biggest talent at PSV at the moment so I just thought I'd share that little bit. The biggest one though, is ubdoubtebly Memphis Depay.

He had a tough youth, with his father never being there for him. This is why he now wears the name Memphis on his shirt, in stead of Depay (his fathers name). I will never forgive the PSV fans for not singing 'Walking in Memphis'. He had bad friends, skipped school etcetera. Football was his one chance to stay on the good path. All his youth coaches saw he had talent, but couldn't handle him. At PSV he got the right management.

In his first couple of years he still had some personal issues. On instagram he posted a picture of his new bag with the caption 'And for the parents of children who to school you buy this bag (worth a few thousand)'. When he got his first pro-contract at PSV he got the word succesfull tattoo'd on the inside of his lower lip. He seemed to care more about the money than football.

Aad de Mos, Guus Hiddink, Dick Advocaat, Louis van Gaal, Ronald Koeman, Fred Rutte and Phillip Cocu are all respected trainers who saw he had the talent to grow into something big though.

He slowly got over his problems and he's now surrounded himself with people he trusts. He's not a saint yet, but he's fully dedicated to his football now. Many expected him to leave after his worldcup, or have an ego the size of Jupiter after he returned. But he didn't, he stayed and was calm and focussed. He wanted to do one more thing before leaving Eindhoven: win the Eredivisie. He did not want to leave his club without winning anything. With PSV now standing 12 points above Ajax, this should only be a matter of time.

Onto his football:
At a very young age he already had the perfect body. He's very strong and rarely gets pushed off the ball by defenders. This is a great asset, especially for a young winger. He has the Ronaldo body type (not as extreme) already and he's only 21.

He started off always trying to pass defenders and shoot with his right foot. This would lead to frustration with his teammates. He slowly started timing this better and also passed the ball, but he would still shoot way to much. Last year he pretty much got over over this problem, he was part of the team and he no longer was the team. He would no longer ALWAYS do a Robben, cut inside and shoot. He would also turn outside and give a cross. When he did cut inside, but couldn't shoot he would pass the ball. He's becoming more and more a complete forward.

In his first few years he rarely used his left foot, this changed though. When he did start playing more as a team member he started shooting and crossing more and more with his left. It's not great yet, but he does use it. I'm sure he's working on it.

He never scored headers much untill this year. You can see he's been working on this alot, having scored 2 already this season and with a fine technique too. I think he took some lessons from RvP at the world cup, as it seems a bit similar (not the goal vs Spain!).

He now tracks back when he loses the ball, doesn't try to pass a man on a dangerous location either. He passes the ball when he's doubled up on (which is pretty much always nowadays). He's no wingback in the slightest, so don't worry about ever seeing him there in a 352. He's a left winger but he has the freedom to roam and he can be of influence everywhere up top, the person you can most compare him to at the moment is Ronaldo.

He's only got 3 assists in the league at the moment but he's pretty much at the base of every PSV attack and gave alot of pre-assist balls. He's nowhere near as greedy as he used to be.

His greatest asset still is his right foot though. He can score from pretty much everywhere on the pitch with that thing. He has a great freekick and can curve balls around the keeper. It doesn't matter if he's in the 16 or outside, he can shoot and score with the slightest opening. 15 goals in 18 matches this year isn't a bad statistic for a 21 year old. His kicks are so hard the keeper usually doesn't have a chance, although it may seem like they do. Mark van Bommel even took some lessons from him and scored a 30-yard screamer, claiming he was training on those with Memphis. Not a good penalty taker though, missed 2 this season as he can be a bit overconfident.

He's very quick and very skillfull. He can pass a man easily and he's not shrugged off the ball much either. He's got a great technique and flair to his play and is a great player to watch.

He's turning more and more into Christiano Ronaldo. He's 21 and still developing every part of his game. At the moment I say his biggest weakness is still his decision making and backtracking. They are not sub-par though. He's a perfectionist and you can see he gets annoyed with himself when an action doesn't work. He trains on it immediately afterwards, he's the first to come into the club and the last to leave. Fully dedicated to the game as he knows he can be Hollands' next Arjen Robben. He will only get better and better and I'm sure Louis van Gaal will want him here next season.

After this season I really think he's ready for Manchester United and it would be a dream come true for me to see him play for the 2 clubs I love. He might not set the world on fire instantly, but he will have an impact. PSV rejected an 20m+ Euro offer already last summer and he signed a new contract after this. So the reports he's available for 10m are bollocks, since he's improving massively this season and PSV won't be happy to let him go. They know they can't hold onto him as he's the best the Eredivisie has to offer at the moment though. A 30m Euro+ offer is something a Dutch club can't say no to and it would be cheap, as I think he will be one of the stars of the future and will cost alot more if we don't get him now.

Spurs wanted him (I think they made the offer) and Koeman has already said he tried to get him to join Southampton aswell.
