Not saying I'd be happy if we only finished 4th and played shit football but that still has to be the main priority and would be no real disaster if that's all we achieved. That being said that's a minimum requirement for the club, not the manager and I would 100% want a change of manager in the summer if that's how it transpired. I still think we're going to go close for the league though.

Bar AZ, it Happens at every club he's gone to since leaving Ajax 20 years ago. Comes in, stirs things up, plays pretty predictable boring football, falls out with the directives/players/media then fucks off after a couple of seasons. But he does leave the club ready for the next manager to inherit title winning squads which is why he was brought in in the first place. Let's face it. VGs philosophy was never ever going to be compatible with our own which is why he was brought in on a short term deal. He is going to leave us in a lot healthier position than when he came although spending nearly £300 goes a long way towards that. If I had the choice between him carrying on another year or stepping down at the end of the season then I would say, thanks very much Louis but adios.

Well it depends; a full squad with Luke Shaw in at the start of the season was an entirely different proposition. We knew we were light going into this campaign, we were all scratching our heads. BUT Ed and VG said they would rather get the right quality in than buy for the sake of it. Live by that decision, die by it. We'll see what January brings (usually not a lot).
I've seen what VG sides do, and can do, and if he gets his brain into gear makes a prudent signing or two in January then there's no reason he can't win the title this year with a fully fit squad he's got. We still need further reshaping in the Summer though, no matter who's in charge. By the end of this season I expect him to have visibly demonstrated a marrying of defence and offence, or at least make capital on the current defensive solidity.
If he can do that , then he'd be worth a punt for his final year. And no, I wouldn't extend it beyond that, unless I saw the Ajax 95 side develop before my eyes.

I think the only way he's worth keeping for his 3rd year is if none of the top guys are available. If Pep becomes available in the summer you'd be crazy not to consider replacing LVG regardless of how well we do this season purely because he's only staying for 1 more year and missing out on one of the best managers in the world for the sake of a year would be a big call. I don't mean that in a you're fired kind of way.
More of a mutual parting of company, thanks for what you've done in a difficult period for the club but we can't miss out on this guy who could manage us for the next decade (although Pep hasn't shown great staying power either). Maybe if we do win the league this season he may retire anyway, going out on a high might be too much for his ego to turn down. I took over a terrible United squad and left them as champions within 2 years, so suck it!

It's disappointing because our expectations were a lot higher at the beginning of the season. I still think he and Ed did a great job with the transfers, apart from Martial who still seems a little pricey but can't complain with the potential he's shown. I think we can get second spot this year and if we improve our performances I'd keep Van Gaal. Unless of course we can get someone like Pep for the long run. But Can Gaal's said on a few occasions that Giggs is his replacement and I'm not at all eager to see him manage us.

Yeah I've not seen enough from Giggs on the sidelines to suggest he's ready for the job. He appears like nothing more than a yes man. He needs to go get a job after LVG and prove himself.

You won't see him jumping up and down cause he'll have to follow the protocol that's expected of him by VG. As far as I can see he's going through the Dutch coaching academy system methods. I think that's why Fergie said 'I think Ryan is enjoying learning a different way of doing things' the other week.

God we're spoilt, we finished out of the top four in one season.
On performances and results I'd say we are about on par, he's consistent.
LVG has done a good job though and to say we aren't progressing and he's destroying the club is just utter horseshit. Just because we have spent 250m doesn't give us some god given right to romp the league either, with a fair chunk of that being on a player who is no longer here.

People also forget Net spend and don't factor in wages no longer being paid out, and the 20 players out, the 7 in. And the complete retooling of an entire squad at all levels - which is still ongoing

Well he just said we are a mediocre club and people shouldn't expect the Man Utd of 10 years ago is horseshit as well. You are brought here to do that! else we could have just stick with Moyes.

It's called living in the real world.
And he didn't say we are a mediocre club at all.

He's spot on and has said what most level headed United fans think anyway. He never said we can't be successful and win titles, he said we'll not be able to dominate English football like we have done in the past. Doesn't upset me at all as they're my exact thoughts anyway.

I would have thought it was obvious by now that none of the 'big money' clubs will 'dominate' like they have done in the past with the extra TV money coming through to the other BPL clubs.
I don't expect to see a dominant team surface for a few years yet. If we build right, like we are doing , it should / could be us. More Luke Shaw's, more Martial's.

The odds on him being the next manager to leave his job have fallen dramatically. Seems like a false alarm though, as someone appears to have started a rumour of him resigning this morning using a fake twitter account.
How easily the bookies take money off gullible football fans.
