Yes he could, but not in the Premier League, regardless of the formation/system/possession, etc. Not strong/fast/powerful enough, simple as that, though I don't doubt his tactical awareness and positioning.

I'm not going to have my breakdown until after the transfer window shuts. Blind playing as CB in the PL has to be some kind of joke, right?? :o

www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/louis-van-gaal-qa-manchester-6144019In depth interview with LVG on signings, this season etc. very interesting. Doesn't seem happy with the squad just yet, interesting points on our creativity, so for people thinking he's ignoring that he clearly isn't. Will be interesting to see what happens in the remainder of the window. Looks like he see's Januzaj as a striker as well.

A good read, kinda disappointed with his comment about Young though. Saying he had a good season but he's not a Neymar is a little disparaging. Almost like he's saying no matter how well you play if we can buy a big name you're out. I don't for one second think Young is all of a sudden a world beater but he was excellent last season and has earned his place in the side.

Yeah I'm not sure to what make of it all.
He's clearly desperate to win the league.

It's definitely an interesting read.
He's going to be raising a lot of hopes, mind. There's a lot of fans out there that will read into some of those comments and believe that a TOP player will definitely be coming in this summer. I for one can't really see it, I may be wrong, but I'm not sure there's many players out there that fit the criteria and will be a viable option.

Glazers have said to him "put us at the very top domestically and in Europe" and if that's the brief, it goes above and beyond anything Fergie was ever tasked with.
It's just not doable in 3 years.

I'm sure I've seen Louis quoted saying that he's told his wife he may be interested in extending his stay as manager. I could just be going mad.
EDIT: Having re-read the article, I can confirm I'm going mad(it's in the same bloody article) but at least I was correct.

It wouldn't surprise me if he did another year if things weren't quite right, he's got a bucket load on his plate on and off the pitch if he's been tasked with restructuring the club from the bottom up.

It's a short term project for him without doubt. If he wants to end his 3 years successfully he's got to win a major trophy and to do that he can't be spending his time introducing too much young talent who may or may not work out. He needs players who can deliver now. I suppose what it does do is leave the next guy with a better core squad of players than LVG himself was left with whilst also taking us back to the top and solidifying our position. Meaning the next guy will be able to spend more time nurturing the youngsters in the squad. Maybe we win a major trophy this season, LVG wants to extend his stay for another couple of seasons and then he'd have more time to nurture the youngsters himself.
I've said before we've got a good balance of experience, players in their prime or close to it and young talent champing at the bit to break through right now. It's plain for anybody to see that we've got a very secure and solid squad of which will be around for a few years. There's literally only Carrick that you could see retiring any time soon out of these guys and even he's probably got a few seasons left in him for me with the way he plays.

I kind of agree with LVG's comments about us needing a "special player", a game changer like Hazard, Messi, Neymar, etc. But I also sort of disagree when he says we need more creativity. We have creative players: Herrera, Schweini, Carrick and even Schneiderlin can all pick up those killer passes. What we don't do enough though are making runs and opening up spaces at the right time, in the right way. And that has nothing to do with creativity as such: it's about understanding the game and gelling as a team.
And I think we're just on the right track to gel perperly as we have assembled an excellent squad with a solid core. For once, I don't think we need to buy big: we just need to replace Di Maria properly with a quality signing, but that doesn't mean we need to splash 60+M (good if we can get that top signing, but Pedro at 20+M is an amazing signing). It's down to the players to make the rights runs, the right calls/passes and the right movements all over the pitch: but that is your job, Mr Van Gaal. The quality is there now.

I think young guys like Memphis, Januzaj, Lingard and Pereira are pretty creative and pacey when it comes to it, but whether Van Gaal will trust any of them is the question. Obviously they can't play in every match but some sort of rotation will be really nice to see

Van Gaal confirms preferred formation
Louis van Gaal has confirmed he intends to use a 4-3-3 formation with Manchester United in the new Barclays Premier League season.
The Reds appeared to operate with a system resembling 4-2-3-1 on Tour 2015 presented by Aon as Memphis Depay performed in a no.10 role behind centre-forward Wayne Rooney with Ashley Young and Juan Mata on the flanks. However, it would seem from the manager's latest comments that he sees the position occupied in pre-season by his fellow Dutchman as being part of the midfield three.
"That the midfielder is [sometimes] in front of the striker is not bad because I think you do need variation in your attack," said van Gaal, in a press conference following the final tour match against PSG.
"I like that and I ask for that, especially from Memphis. It can also be Carrick or Schweinsteiger or Schneiderlin once in a while but mostly Memphis. It depends on our opponents."
When asked which formation he will deploy in the Barclays Premier League, van Gaal replied: "More or less 4-3-3. We played that already last season, in the second half of the season, and I have said that is the system I want to use. We played in our shape [on tour] and played how we have to play. That's also where I have been very satisfied.”
From a tactical perspective, the key is probably the attacking central midfield position where Memphis, Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira were stationed at various times in the United States. There could also be an opportunity for Juan Mata or Ander Herrera to prove their suitability to play alongside more defensive-minded colleagues such as Michael Carrick, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
Memphis, who is also a candidate for the wider roles in the front three, has been entrusted with the job in each of the four starting line-ups in the US and could be considered the favourite to start there against Tottenham.
