With a midfielder brought in you'd imagine he'll be the striker in that formation or at worst the tip of the 3 man midfield attacking mid/number10 position.

Yeah I'd say that too but as a lone striker he has the tendency to drop deep.

But he also had his best goalscoring season occupying that sort of role.

Say we go 433, where do you think he'd deploy Rooney? False 9 or wide forward I imagine, if we have balanced midfield behind him.

I still think 4-3-3 is the best possible formation with the players we have and will/should add this summer. And if we finally get a good CM-3 behind him, I believe Rooney would be an excellent false 9/wide forward (rotating in a fluid front-3) if given the proper service.
Rooney is always forced to drop deep because he doesn't get good service AND because we fail to control the tempo and orchestrate the play without him deep.

"Van Gaal deserves and receives support from fans. On Saturday, over 2,000 travelling Reds in Wales' second biggest city were singing "Louis van Gaal's red and white army." That support should continue until the end of the season." "Old Trafford should become a hostile place for teams to visit, starting with Sunderland and then especially vs. Arsenal in the cup on a Monday night." "The players need to feel that backing in these uncertain times, when their confidence appears sapped"

Good. A bit of an iron fist will do only good to that bunch of wimps!
Thank you Koeman for opening our eyes completely.

lol. if you listen to players who've played under him, he's exactly like Fergie, which is one of the reasons why Woody went with him.

Maybe a bit of a self proclaiming tactic too. Anyway, until Koeman wins some major league or some European cup, using all of his knowledge picked up and learned (as he said himself) from this arrogant, stubborn oblong headed bastard he shouldn't speak about the man with a stinky wet sock up his mouth. The smell of it is unbearable and it spreads badly even through high-tech electronic devices.

You gotta remember too the Dutch footballing fraternity falls out with itself more often than they individually change their underpants.

thepeoplesperson.com/2015/02/24/why-van-gaal-deserves-to-be-backed-by-man-united-fans-77523/Moyes was a disaster, Van Gaal has been a disappointment. For the Dutchman things can get better, for the Scot they could only have got worse. Constructive criticism is healthy and fans will continue to find fault in Van Gaal's choices. He is making mistakes and they should not be ignored. But redemption is within him in a way that it never was in his predecessor. He deserves at least until the summer, perhaps longer, to see if he can achieve it.Some interesting points there

It's a damn shame Holland went as far as they did in the World Cup. Really his attention should have been fully focused on OT, the timing of him coming in was piss poor, but that's the way it panned out.

Van Gaal has been a disappointment. Not to me, very strong word to be used as a label for the man and it sounds like a judgement, not constructive criticism by the meaning of the word. Why is being 3rd-4th on the table while the team doesn't look like an absolutely unified whole, a disappointment? I've made some points why I think it's like that, there are other reasons as well, like a worn out players, not so intelligent players to understand van Gaal's ideas and translate it on to the pitch, as much as they are trying to (maybe his biggest sin lies here but it's a minor one) but he has an absolute right to ask from his players to do what he feels like is the best for his team. Then you have injuries, slow adapting to the new beautiful post Moyes life and numerous other things. While he was so successful in his career and achieved some amazing things with different clubs in various leagues, he is only a human being also and makes mistakes too. Those mistakes are not so huge as some people suggesting and were blown out of proportion but mainly due to one reason: people are impatient, especially after last season and wanted a quick fix which appeared impossible. Those things require more time. Now some will ask what are his actual ideas? Well, I'm sick of that question to be completely honest and if someone can't figure it out yet, he never will. van Gaal is the man who wants everything on it's place. First and foremost, he needs an adequate personnel to execute his philosophy. (Every great manager actually have some philosophy, it's just isn't called that name in their cases) When he gets them, you'll see a different beast. His teams were a well constructed functional machines, completely made of people who understand each other on the pitch and what he's telling them to do. You can't have and get that from the half of current ones and over night. He doesn't force defensive negative football, he is forced to act like that sometimes due to above things he doesn't have fully yet. Now, whether do we have the time for all this is a question for someone else but what is the alternative? If there is one, who's the guarantee that'll work and succeed in a short period of time? Who is that man and what he'll require to achieve his goals? Is this even possible whoever it is, knowing that one man is not the whole club? Who is such a strong character while gentle, flexible and ruthlessly successful at the same time? In one word, who's the Messiah?
