Says it all about Anderson really. If you want to be a success in another country the least you can do is learn the language, if not how are you supposed to fully integrate yourself in the squad? Another talented player not living up to his potential simply because he couldn't be fucking arsed.

I think he can speak English, just poorly. He always seemed understandable enough when Rio was chasing him around with a camera.
Whatever it is though, it's something to do with mentality and attitude that's cost him a career at the top, there's nothing that a midfielder needs that he can't do and do well, but it's just never worked out like that.
I think he's a bit frail mentally as well as having a seemingly poor work ethic when not playing. I always remember the game against Chelsea when we beat them 3-1 (Nani scored a screamer and Torres made that miss). Anderson started that game brilliantly, he played two cross-field passes that Scholesey would've been proud of and was getting on the ball and making things happen. Then he mishit a pass that let Torres in, Torres fucked up the chance but that was it, Anderson shrunk and was terrible for the rest of the game.
Don't know why I've always remembered that moment, but that was when I decided he wasn't strong enough up top, for something as menial as a misplaced pass to shatter your confidence so obviously just didn't make sense for a top footballer.

You think that's what happened with Tom Cleverley or was it because he wasn't a technically gifted player?

Not really sure, I don't think he's anywhere near as naturally gifted as Anderson, but is/was probably better defensively. Probably why that partnership looked so good for those few games they got together.
I definitely think he's talented enough to have had a career here, even if not a top one, a Fletcher type. So it probably is mental again, he was arguable too safe on the ball in his best games, and a knock to his confidence only made it worse to the point where finding football elsewhere is the best thing for him. Although he doesn't look as good as Delph or Westwood at Villa.

Yeah, I haven't been impressed with Clevs at Villa either... I've seen all but one of his games and he's never close to being the best midfielder in their team. I don't think it's necessarily confidence/mental as you seem to think with Ando.

I don't think it's necessarily confidence/mental as you seem to think with Ando. You mean that about Cleverley or Anderson?

About Cleverley... should have been more clear.
