Right then, the season's over in a month and a half. So I don't think it's too early to start seriously talking about what changes (transfer wise) need to be made in the summer.
For me there's one position that has to take priority and that's a centre forward and one of the highest calibre. We've been linked with Lukaku, Kane, Aubemayang amongst many others. I have to say if I had the choice of anyone I'd be all over Kane. I don't know if there's a better out and out striker in World football at the minute. I think he's the perfect striker and England's most natural since Shearer. Lukaku would also go down really well for me as he has the attributes I really like in a striker, strong and quick, he's an absolute handful. A little concerned about his work rate and at times the amount of effort he seems to put in but there's no doubting his talent and the fact he's not the finished article yet.
Other than a striker I'm not sure. It may come as a shock to people but I don't think a centre back is a high priority if we plan to carry on with Blind there with Smalling. Besides the odd game these 2 have been excellent all season and although I'd like to see Blind pushed further forward I wouldn't lose sleep if he's there again next season. If we are to sign a centre back it has to be a world class experienced one or nobody, absolutely no point buying below par players. I don't even want us to sign a young talented one as I think we have that already at the club. Fosu Mensah has taken the step up to first team football brilliantly and is as impressive in his temperament as he is physically. And then there's Tuanzebe who I've always seen as the most likely to come through the academy and make it in the first team as a central defender. We've also got Mcnair who despite not featuring much this season has shown signs of promise in the past.
Then you've got the full back positions which we'd have said a couple of months ago needed strengthening. Again I'm not too sure anymore. I'm more than happy with Shaw and CBJ at left back. Varela has shown some brilliant stuff at right back and for me deserves a chance as number 1 next season. Darmian is very reliable, superb defensively and if he could do anything going forward he'd be as good as anyone. Then there's the very versatile Mensah who can occupy both positions as well as centre back. So for me there's no need to sign a full back either.
Midfield is a peculiar position. At the beginning of the season we all thought we'd completed our midfield and had the best in the league. Fast forward 9 months and I'm almost certain we need further reinforcements in this area. Carrick and Fellaini need to be moved on which would leave us with Herrera, Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger. Blind may move there if we bring in a central defender and again that man Mensah can play midfield. But that's not enough and I'd like another young player in there. Herrera/Schneiderlin have the potential to be as good a pairing as there is in the league. I feel they compliment each other perfectly but what we're lacking is a powerhouse, aggressive, box-to-box style player. I don't know much about Renato Sanches but we've been linked with him a lot and he was supposedly superb against Bayern. Even though he's seen as more of an attacking mid I have no doubt Barkley could fill that mould. Especially if we revert to a 4-3-3 which I'd prefer. I really think Schneiderlin sitting deep with Herrera and Barkley in front sounds like a mouth watering prospect.
Then you move onto other attackers. I'd have said at the beginning of the season we needed more than just a striker but I'm not sure anymore. I think an attacking mid wouldn't go amiss but Barkley also fits the bill for that. If we sign a top striker then Martial undoubtedly plays out wide, you'd hope Memphis makes improvements next season and the likes of Lingard and Rashford have really impressed and deserve to be part of the clubs first team plans next season. I think when I'm struggling to find a place in our starting 11 for experienced players like Rooney and Mata it shows we don't need to strengthen too much in attack besides the striker I mentioned first.
So yeah that's my opinion on what needs to be done in the summer. Obviously it's all dependent on who the manager is and what happens in terms of outgoings. There's massive question marks over numerous players, especially if Mourinho comes in.
