Van Gaal takes 18-man squad to DenmarkLouis van Gaal has named an 18-man travelling squad for Manchester United’s Europa League match against FC Midtjylland in Denmark on Thursday night. Wayne Rooney is a notable absentee from the flight and the manager is expected to confirm why his captain has not made the trip during his pre-match press conference at 17:00 GMT. You can follow updates from that in ManUtd.com's live blog and the club's official Twitter account manutd. Matteo Darmian is also not involved, as expected, after dislocating his shoulder during the 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light at the weekend. There are a selection of youngsters on the plane with Donald Love on board following his first-team debut against the Black Cats. Will Keane and three players who could make their first senior appearance - Regan Poole, Joe Riley and James Weir - are also part of the squad. TRAVELLING SQUAD TO FACE FC MIDTJYLLAND
De Gea, Romero, Love, McNair, Smalling, Blind, Poole, Riley, Carrick, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Pereira, Weir, Mata, Memphis, Martial, Keane.

Hopefully we get to see a couple of the youngsters get a game. Dave mentioned Riley has been impressive for the U21's recently, so good to see the recognition of this. From this group of players I'd go with this starting lineup: DDG Love Smalling Blind Riley Schneiderlin Herrera Pereira Lingard Keane Memphis Keane and Pereira both deserve a start. Keane for his excellent goalscoring form in the U21's and Pereira for his continued progress and growth. Riley is the only left back in the squad unless they move Blind out there, as Love is the only right back. Martial could do with a day off so I'd give him a break and start Memphis.

Put it one way, if these youngsters aren't involved tomorrow night they better be starting Monday night against Shrewsbury.

You know, I was going for De Gea Varela Smalling Blind BJ Schneiderlin Fellaini Lingard Mata Martial Memphis but I kinda like your idea above, especially since we should probably give some players some time off with the crazy schedule we have

BJ, Varela and Fellaini aren't in the squad. We've got 3 games in the next week so we're going to have to rotate. If we can't get past Midtjylland playing an......experimental side then we can forget winning the competition anyway. If they do perform well and get a good result then we can afford to rest players for the 2nd leg as well. Ideally you'd have guys like Martial playing just 1 game out of the next 3 so he's ready and refreshed for Arsenal.

Ohhhh... I see. Should have checked the people in the squad before making up an 11 I don't think Van Gaal would risk it as much, but I can definitely see Memphis and Herrera starting this one.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MIDTJYLLAND Midtjylland are a relatively young club having only been formed in 1999 when Ikast FS and Herning Fremad merged before the club won promotion to the Danish top flight in 2000. Midtjylland have retained their top flight status ever since despite flirting with bankruptcy. The club, nicknamed The Wolves, play their home games at the MCH Arena in the town of Ikast outside Herning. They became champions of the Danish Superliga for the first time last season beating Copenhagen to the title with three games to spare. Matthew Benham, the Brentford owner, is the majority shareholder at Midtjylland after investing £6.2million in the club in 2014. Manchester United go into the round of 32 tie as overwhelming favourites with Midtjylland on a dismal run of form that has seen them win just twice in their last 14 matches in all competitions. I think Keane may be a little too far but the defence picks itself. 2 of Love, Riley and Mcnair will play. Pereira should definitely start as well, if not today, surely on Monday.

Some surprise exclusions, I don't know about Midgetland but they did beat Soton in the qualifiers and Brugge also I think so it's not going to be easy especially with the squad we are taking but we should still have enough. I like your team Jamie, as you say Riley is the only LB really so should play, he's been very impressive in the u21's and comfortable on either side. Wouldn't be surprised to see us go with three at the back which could maybe take some pressure off our young fullbacks defensively. I agree as well that Keane and Periera deserve a start but Shrewsbury maybe more likely. Would be happy to see any of those players start, looking forward to it

Rooney apparently out for Two months, that's a blow to him for the record he is trying to break.

Knee ligament injury it seems ......... breaking news shit shit shit Wayne Rooney has knee ligament damage, according to The Times, who report that the striker will be out for two months - which is bad news not only for Louis van Gaal but also for England with the Euros coming up.
