Can't really understand all the criticism levelled at the team last night. Yes we started poorly and ended poorly but I think there was enough on show to think that we are improving.
I wasn't sure about signing Basti but was I ever wrong. I never doubted his talent but I did have reservations on his fitness. Those reservations are well and truely out the door. He's been immense for us so far. That captain figure we've been missing since Keane.
For me our biggest problem is obviously getting it right between defense and attack. At the start of the season we were defending well but weren't great in attack. Now at times it's almost the other way round. It's great to see but I think questions have to be asked why our CBs are scoring from open play and getting assists. Blind at times is running down the left wing and Smalling pushing forward on the right and we were lucky on more than one occasion when they hit us on the counter. It may make it more exciting but I don't think that's the way to balance a team. A few tweaks is all that's needed but they are important tweaks.
Other worrying signs are the form of Memphis and Rooney. It is still very early days for Memphis but I did expect a lot more of him. A spell on the bench would do him no harm. Rooney i just can't defend no more. He's always had qualities to make him a certain starter but I just can't think of one at the minute. He runs around a lot but I could do that and I'd only ask for a tenth of his wage and I'd probably be just as effective as him. I say give the captains armband to Basti and let Rooney think long and hard about his future.
On the plus side for VG, it's good to see us finally having a go even if we did slightly spoil it in the second half. On the negative side, I wish he'd leave our defense alone once the game starts. If a player is having a shocker then by all means but not for tactical reasons.
