I thought there were signs of improvement in terms of attack tonight though. Hopefully Rooney is back and has a point to prove at the weekend, swap him with Mata and keep the attack as it is.
I just thought they broke too easily, which Schneiderlin would've helped to stop. Schweinsteiger and Herrera are not holding midfielders. People seem to think Schwein is but I've always seen him far more attacking and creative than that, more of a Scholes type cm to me and we all know Herrera is better further forward.
It was a negative night for various reasons but there were still a few positives to take from it. Just want Memphis to look as dangerous as he did for a lot of tonight in the league now!

We're not that lucky to get all the new signings to slot in and gel seamlessly, it's going to take another chunk of time. We've filled the gaps nicely now they just need to gel as team ...again.
Shaw loss fucks the fluency and cohesion we've finally developed in defence up, which is a real pain in the arse. We can cover it but it's more upheaval

Basti/Carrick/Schneiderlin have all been playing that holding role for the past season so someone is going to have to take on a new role, at the minute we've got two players for one job which we don't really need.
Aye, big worry with Shaw out is will that Smalling and Blind combo split up, seemed to be building something there. Such a shame,

I wouldn't split it up tbh. I'd prefer Rojo at left back anyway, more pace. I'd even be tempted to switch Darmian to the left and stick Valencia on the right just to keep the central pairing together.

As for the midfielders it would all be solved if we played a 4-3-3. With this selection of players it's undoubtedly the best option in my opinion. Schneiderlin sitting deep with Schwein and Herrera in front. Carrick rotating with Schwein and Schneid when needed. Just makes sense to me.

Scweingsteiger isn't a ball winner like schniederlin, same with herrera, Schniederlin or Fellaini need to play as that ball winner, then you have Schweingsteiger as that scholes or Pirlo, who can boss games
it wasn't a bad game honestly going forward, think we failed to take our chances but we had the movement going forward, defensively though it wasn't good
at least depay got a goal against his old club but its a game we should have won given the balance of play, but if we are to lose a game, may as well its now

I've lost patience. I'm so deflated at the moment. We play shit football, and barring about 6 matches last season, we have ever since van Gaal rocked up. We have no fluency, no drive, no sense of urgency even when our back is against the wall, a painfully thin squad with no match winners on the bench. We have become exactly why so many non football fans, particularly Americans, think the sport is shit. We may as well just watch this Simpsons gif for 90 minutes My eldest boy didn't come to mine for the match last Saturday, I think that's the first time ever that we haven't watched an afternoon match together when it has been possible for us to do so. He's losing interest, he spent the afternoon playing video games. I was, and still am, gutted that he didn't want to watch the match, but in all honesty I can't blame him. We played shit, we won because of a set piece, a penalty, a wonder goal, and because somehow Liverpool are slightly more shit than us. Tonight we were shit and uninteresting again. Boring fucking football. To make matters worse one of the only players who has shown any industry this season is out for months. I'm more disillusioned now than I was at any point under Moyes. I might find myself playing video games on the weekend from now on.

I think you are a little harsh there Monty. We were playing boring football up until the first half of the Liverpool match. I thought we played really well today. ... just unlucky to concede due to some poor defending. When we had the ball, we weren't just playing keep ball and passing sideways or backwards. There were lots of opportunities created but poor finishing let us down.Bruma also had an outstanding game for PSV. He blocked a number of shots. There were more positives than negatives in my opinion. Memphis and Martial show some good understanding up front. Young also seems to be enjoying himself again. There were also more movement up front. No shame in this defeat.

We lost because I missed the match obviously. Had a meeting, it was quite dull.
Edit: just saw the highlights. Terrible for Shaw - he was in pretty good form as well. Might have scored if not for that tackle. Pity for Blind too - that deflection was vital since Young was probably going to clear the ball.
How did Guardado play?

Guardado had a brilliant game, all over the place and played the pass that started the second goal. Either than that I was too gutted with Luke Shaw being injured than to worry about the result but Herrera was too safe yesterday and Mata was horrible really, he couldn't shoo when he had to, couldn't make his mind up and was affecting most of the good play. We will qualify no two ways about it, it was a smash and grab for them, all they did was defend well I'm the second half, Guardado and Leistienne were their best attacking players.

Yes it was a huge disappointment the result and Shaw out is hard. Much more positive in attack but finishing lets us down Memphis / Martial very promising and finding each other well it can only get better they only have 1 match under their belt Memphis needs to be a bit less greedy and Martial has to take his chances
I was also disappointment in Mata and our set pieces just didn't work last night........ wrong choices maybe
Fellaini on did nothing to improve our chances to equalize if anything it seemed more disruptive to our play
Confident we will blow them away in the return match at Old Trafford and we can still win this group
Knuckle down and work hard ...... There is way more to come from this team

For me, it was the best and most fluent our attack has played so far this season. We had 3 players who were taking on and going at defenders in Young, Martial and Memphis. I think Martial offered what our attack has been missing so far this season and that is someone who is always bothering defenders, he did great holding the ball up and bringing others into play which is what you want your striker to do as well as scoring goals. He started off what could be a very promising relationship with Memphis from what I saw as well. We kept getting hit on the counter which is the first time we've seen that this season, that in itself suggests there was more attacking intent than previous games as there's barely been a chance for other teams to counter us this season. As for being more disillusioned now than when under Moyes, I can't see that point of view at all. It's like chalk and cheese compared to the season he was here in every aspect for me. Don't get pissed on by anyone, especially not the bigger teams. We don't aspire to be as good as City, nor do we play for draws against Liverpool. We've learned how to defend and control games. Van Gaal is in the Champions league now on the back of his own success of getting into the top 4, which Moyes didn't just fail to do, he got absolutely nowhere near. We also have a manager who commands respect and has the aura of a big time manager, rather than timid little Dave who played a half fit Rooney because he was scared of what the media would say if he left him out. I still insist that there's only 1 issue with this team and that is that it hasn't quite clicked yet in the final 3rd. But we're seeing signs that it's starting to come together and my favourite word at the moment is...PATIENCE!

Scholes - this is one of his better statements about us recently Manchester United were given another reality check as PSV Eindhoven came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night, but Paul Scholes was encouraged by what he saw. The game was marred by a horrific injury to Luke Shaw, with the England left-back carried off with a double fracture of his right leg, but Memphis Depay weaved his way through the PSV defence to give the visitors the lead. United were unable to hold on until half-time, as Hector Moreno headed the hosts level, before Luciano Narsingh finished a sweeping move to consign the Red Devils to defeat on their return to the Champions League. But former midfielder Scholes was reluctant to be overly critical of Louis van Gaal's side following a chastening evening in Holland, believing he had seen plenty to suggest United are heading in the right direction. Looking at his BT Sport colleagues Jake Humphreys and Owen Hargreaves, Scholes said: 'You two probably think I'm mental, but I was encouraged. They shouldn’t have lost the game. I thought they played really well, and just lacked it in the final third. It’s not a great night, but I thought they looked dangerous and they have something to build on.' 'Juan Mata found it difficult to have an influence on the game in the number 10 role. I think Wayne Rooney comes straight back into that position. But elsewhere there was pace and strength. [Anthony] Martial was getting in behind, and you had the quality of [Bastian] Schweinsteiger in midfield. I think there’s the makings of a really good side there.'

Pretty much what I thought about the game. Replace Mata with Rooney and it's an exciting attacking lineup for me. The thing with Rooney is even when he's not on top form he can still give something to the team, Mata is completely useless when he's performing as bad as he did last night.

But we're seeing signs that it's starting to come together and my favourite word at the moment is...PATIENCE! I've slept on it and I still don't feel any better. Every time we play I'm reminded of the last 1/4 against Blackburn a few years ago when we won our 19th title, when we were just knocking the ball about to see out the game. That's what we do right from kickoff. It's mind numbingly boring football. Even if our attack does click (which I'm not sure they will, too many inconsistent players, and Rooney in terminal decline), we are an injury or two away from being fucked, we already look dangerously thin in defence with Shaws injury. We barely have a squad capable of challenging on 1 front, let alone 4. I think the size and lack of experience in the squad is going to cost us. At the moment our attack is more likely to bump into each other than beat a man or split the defence with a pass. The highlight of my week has always been watching the match with my boys, but now the older one is losing interest, which is heartbreaking for me. He can't be bothered to watch another boring game of football, but I really can't blame him. The last couple of years under Ferguson weren't particularly good football wise, but at least we were winning, and at least there was some unpredictability. We were bad under Moyes, but at least things happened, it was tough to watch but you couldn't look away. At the moment it's the same old shit, game after game, boring football with no urgency or creativity or drive. I don't know how many more games I can watch where we narrowly beat a lower team by passing them to death, instead of at least trying to get at them.
