Not a spectacular display but I wouldn't expect that on the first day of the season, quite a few new players to bed in so will take time to gel. A win is the most important thing, it was strange game, neither side created very much. We were very sluggish for the first 15 then got the goal and picked it up until HT. Second half never really got going, pre season taking its toll maybe. Darmian was brilliant, Romero solid but Spurs didn't test him enough with crosses so will be interesting how he goes in the next few games, at times trying to be too fancy with his feet but general distribution was fine. Schneiderlin grew as the game went on, cut out passes etc. he'll be key for us this season. For the period of the build up of our goal and 20 mins after that there was some decent stuff. Work to be done, I think Memphis again did well first half, second faded just think it would be wise to swap him with mata or someone else and give him a run on the wing 10/20 minutes just to mix it up. Forgot to mention Smalling having Kane in his pocket once again, Blind also fairly solid but more tests to come for him as well. Top of the league!

First game of the season and an early kick off I'll take the 3 points over a great performance every day. I thought we were solid though, especially in defence all 4 of them were top drawer and despite a few dodgy kicks Romero was decent as well. Schneiderlin added that solidity to the midfield that we craved. In the final 3rd we were shit to put it bluntly, Rooney wasn't at it at all and I still think Memphis is out of position and should be played from wide.
All in all it's a great start to the season to be honest as we got the 3 points and that is all that matters to me right now.

Agree with Dave. It's always hard to assess the first game of the season, especially with so many new players. So I'm not going to bother Positives: Darmian looking like the player we've been missing since Neville, Smalling although he fills me with dread anytime he goes near the ball played a blinder today. Morgan will be massive for us, Carrick could have a new lease of life with less responsibility. Probably for the first time ever VG got his substitutions right. Taking off and bringing on the right player at the right time. Negatives: Rooney looking about as sharp as a fecking sponge, Shaw had some good moments but his position was threatened too many times which was probably why Young played to help protect him. Although Young gives his all every game we're going to need someone better than him if VG wants to play with a winger. His final ball is never going to worry the opposition defence. Finally the same old story as last season. Way too little shots on target and playing at a high tempo for a sustained time seems to elude us. Not going to worry about it in the first game of the season but we have to see a marked improvement in the not to distant future. Nervy finish but I seen good points that we can improve on. 3 points, no goals conceded I'll take that as a plus.

Must have been a poor spectacle, we're so far down the running order on MOTD lol. A win's a win though.

It really wasn't great, but as first games come, it wasn't too bad. I would have taken the performance prior to the game if I knew we'd get the 3 points, but it needs to improve. There needs to be a progression in the quality of our performances, and I do think that'll come. Ultimately, the 3 points will do me just fine today. There was certainly positives. Darmian was excellent, Smalling was outstanding and Shaw went another 90 minutes without injury . In all seriousness, if Luke can stay fit for a large part of the season I think he'll be one of the stand-outs this season. The same goes for Smalling. As Dave said; Schneiderlin will be key this season. There were glimpses of what he'll bring, throughout the match. The performance was a big negative, but there was a lot of positives. On to Villa. The process continues.

Looked as if they could waltz through us at will for the first quarter of the game, something akin to the PSG game. Luckily we and not they got the first goal. Romero with good saves at the end to boot

Same here, really happy with Darmian, when Valencia came on I was a little disappointed just because it's great watching him play. By far the sharpest player on tour and yesterday. I'm happy with both Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger - both showed potential without them having some spectacular game. Memphis...I don't know what to make of him just yet, he seems really eager that much I can tell, but he was reckless and didn't provide enough for Rooney as he should have in that spot. Being a little harsh since it's his first game, but on the plus side he was really fast and his passes were on point. I hope to see the team that played after the substitutes in the next match + Darmian - looked a lot more threatening.
