As much as I would dream of a player like Verratti, I believe our midfield needs a tidy, physically solid, & combative box-to-box player to make it complete. Fellaini imo is a good second-choice, but we need that extra bit of quality to move to the next level. Not sure if our future CM is in that list above, as no one knows what LVG has in mind.

if we are going with a PSG style midfield so a deep lying playmaker in Cabaye and two more defensive midsCarrick in the slot with Herrera in one of those, with someone else next to Herrera (not sure if Fellaini fits as all 3 of those PSG players would be better passers then fellaini) Schnierderlin possibly with Herrera and Carrick behind them. Fellaini off the bench? I am not sure if I get this right, could you come again? You confused the feck outta me!

tidy, physically solid, & combative box-to-box player to make it complete Marco Verratti is exactly that plus very composed on the ball and a great passer.

Marco Verratti is exactly that plus very composed on the ball and a great passer. Completely agree. But I wonder if it wouldn't be good to get some muscle/height/power in there. I am sure a midfield 3 of Carrick/Verratti/Herrera would be amazing, but no one can deny the impact someone like Fellaini has had: not only because of his height, but his general physical contribution and the fact he can bully opponent: this is still a big part of the English game imo. I just wonder if we wouldn't be too leightweight? But don't get me wrong, in my books Verratti is an exceptional player.

Gündogan close to agreeing a deal with united according to Bild. He would be a great addition for the reported £15M fee even if it is a risk regarding his recent long term injury. I hope we can try to get Schneiderlin as well and our midfield would be sorted for a long long time.

He's a good player but too similar to Herrera in type, I'd be looking elsewhere.

you would refuse a world class CM for 15 mill, knowing that he could be just cover for the first team/he moves ahead of herrera OR even he starts with Herrera and we get another DM type of player (at the end of the day, if we do go for that 3 man PSG style midfield, Herrera and Gundogan could more than co-exist, they may even feed of each other)
for 15 million, we could get him, plus still have plenty of money to get whoever it is that is supposed to be the fit. and still have money to get that big money player, and still be within the FFP regulations

Probably not the type of CM we ultimately need but I disagree on him being similar to Ander, he is a lot better in a deeper role where he can use his range of passing and runs to get the play forward. He is more dynamic version of Scholes in his latter years, he can deffo control a game and at his best a brilliant player, more physical and tactically aware than Ander in my opinion. Hence why I say we go for him and Schneiderlin.

Would be hard to say no to him for a decent price, but I am with Jamie on this as I don't think he is the type of player we need. We already have two quality passers in Carrick and Blind, who play deep and orchestrate the game perfectly, shielding the defence well with clever positioning.
What we lack though is at least one more quality box-to-box to operate in that 4-3-3, to partner Herrera or cover for him when he gets injured/rested. Gundogan is not really a box-to-box, although some of his performances have been brilliant and suggesting that he could play that role (vs City in the CL for instance). But let's be honest, he is at his best in a deep-lying, Scholes-of-late role.
Besides, I won't change my opinion that we could do with some more muscle in the middle. Ideally we should look at a box-to-box player who offers that with an excellent all-round game, and imo Schneiderlin offers just that. Or someone like Pogba/Vidal/Nainggolan/Matuidi depending on what LVG is looking for exactly. But that's the type of player we should be after: a solid box-to-box.

For 15m I wouldn't say no but likewise I don't really think he's what we need.
We shall see.. BILD is no more reliable than the Daily Fail.

Gundogan has not been the same after his comeback but he's still quality player and a Modrić type one, not Herrera. He is a playmaker from the exact middle or from the deep (regista if you like a foreign term), very flexible. If we're to bring him in, I guess he'd get that playmaking role instead of Mata, there can be only one on the pitch, unless one of them doesn't get a different role to play. Both capable of something else.
That injury has really pulled him back a bit in terms of form, however, I wouldn't say no to him especially for that price.
What really matters here is if van Gaal wants him, he most probably knows why.
