I'm going to assume Herrera was injured, as even with a yellow hanging over him...taking him off was a strange decision. Anyone with half a brain saw that it left us with the same problems as last season, a central midfield that is much too slow. Our midfield should consist of Blind or Carrick not Blind and Carrick.

Just woke up in my side of the world to see the result; from reports and you guys chatting, it seems like a slightly bitter pill, which you lot seem to be taking pretty well. I want to be angry, but I'll reserve judgment until I watch the game.
Heard Welbeck celebrated his goal, surprising, considering.
Re Carrick comments: if I'm honest, I've been dreading Carricks return. I think Blind and Herrera are the best CM pairing we can hope for this season, playing Carrick with either of these, especially Blind, is a step backwards in my opinion.

Not sure what LVG's issue with herrera is/are. United fans ( from the sane and sensible ones to the muppets and glory hunters)have been saying Herrera should be starting every week and not being taken off every now and then. Something is not right imo if everybody is of the same opinion apart from your manager.

I didnt watch the match and when I saw the result in the morning I was disappointed, we had a great chance to win the FA Cup this season but we have blown it.
But FA Cup is just a bonus this season our main priority is top 4, We have no other distractions now and top 4 is a must. If LVG miss out on top 4 then he has to go imo. He spent millions, made us to watch crap football, beaten by MK Dons and now a FA Cup exit and the only thing in his favor is that we are still 4th.

Sick to death of these pundits and ex players.
First half we played well it was a good game, second half the subs for both teams messed it up. Not sure why Herrera was subbed perhaps he was venturing too far forward or maybe he was injured but other than that can't criticise LVG. Perhaps he felt he were losing a battle in midfield or not having enough control, Blind probably should have been the one but he is a clear favourite and does his job.
The referee didn't help us, inconsistent decisions but that's no excuse. Though with 10 men we didn't give up and kept going.
Ultimately we lapped it up on a silver platter with that one mistake.

How many people on here thinks that we'll go for another left back in the summer? This question in my head is triggered by his constant injuries, struggles to adapt in the way we're playing and very average performances, especially in defense > being caught out high up the pitch very often when played. I know he's just arrived and is just 19 years old but still. Basically, do people think he should get some competition for that spot, assuming you disagree with Blind being played there and Rojo as a main LCB without shifting him on two positions, not allowing him to settle properly and learn? Shaw struggled against the pace of Chamberlain but he was coming back from injury perhaps wary of his hamstring, he's been in and out of the side all season, hit and miss in terms of performances. He'll make mistakes as he is only 19, ultimately though we paid 30m ish and he's here for the long haul. Well Rojo can play there but by a distance he's been our best CB so why move him, Blind can do the job, Young's been capable and then we have James who's signed a new deal so must surely have a near future so we do have options. That said I wouldn't be surprised to see a back up/competition left back but we have much bigger priorities elsewhere for me.

Yeah, thanks on your answer Dave but I deleted that post and copied it in the new thread. I think it's better that this talk has a thread for itself.

So apparently Shaw was injured and Herrera was a tactical sub.

I just hope that LVG doesn't think that Carrick and Blind together are a better choice than Herrera or Mata alongside either of them or else we are doomed to play conservative football forever.

Probably spotted Blind was struggling and needed extra help defensively, so sacrifice Herrera, straight forward enough swap from that pov. Still tells you more about the inherent weakness in the middle of midfield and defence, and imbalance in the squad in general. Roll on Summer, can't come soon enough! just hope we have enough to hold out for top four.

I'd go with what Dave said earlier - Shaw was struggling so I think Van Gaal figured Rojo will do a better job (which he did). As for taking Herrera out maybe he just wanted more stability in midfield since Blind wasn't handling it all that well. If you want to play Carrick and Blind, then the natural choice is Herrera to go out

I don't understand all the sticks we're getting. It was a good football game, and one massive defensive mistake as well as Di Maria's unforgivable reaction made it impossible for us to go through.
But all in all, we could most certainly have beaten them. They weren't superior. LVG is doing much progress, and I am already looking forward to next season as I am sure we will challenge for the title. To be fair, I am sorry for Di Maria, but his poor form at the moment is one of the reason why we're struggling because we lack a world-beater upfront. LVG's set up is perfect to get our wide attackers into good positions, but sadly Di Maria is messing with every one of the balls he gets. And when he doesn't, we score. Young is Young and you can't expect him to become a world beater overnight. Put two world-class wide-men next to Rooney, and we would beat that Arsenal team 5-2. And this is no exaggeration.
I am sad with the loss, but far from depressed, unlike in the Moyes's era. We're on the right track and I find it funny that everyone (media/pundits, etc) keeps criticising LVG at this point. Trust me, he will have the last laugh. Certainly not this season, but next year for sure.
Congrat's to Rooney, Rojo, Smalling, Fellaini and Valencia (despite his mistake he kept Sanchez at bay all game, and did fairly well). Di Maria however was a disgrace. I have no problem with a player struggling to find form, who is at least trying, but that behaviour of his is one of the reason why I would send him back to Madrid ASAP. I am afraid he lacks the bite to settle in this type of football.

I think the fact that he reacted like that was born out of pure frustration, he is trying albeit he never tracked Monreal back for their first which coupled with Valencia getting sucked in towards the ball leaving us wide open down that flank was probably the main reason they scored that goal. I was disappointed with him going down so easy for his first yellow as I was with Adnan for his pathetic attempts to con the referee. Bearing in mind ADM also hasn't scored since October, it is a disappointment from him with the reputation he came with , not to mind the transfer fee and wages. A good player doesn't go that bad overnight (and he has had his share of off-field personal problems since his arrival), but I do still believe in him and am not calling for his head yet.
