we're apparently watching Walcott according to the prestigious goal.com
didn't realise refs in the championship weren't full time? i would have thought given the size of the league (pretty much comparable to MLS and the J-League in terms of popularity) as well as players making really good money, they would have full time refs good that real madrid fined those fans who attacked bale's car. its just stupid and the club need to show at least that much.

him and Hummels as our CB pairing would be amazing Nothing against you Spens (just making the quote), but I wonder why many people assume that we are going to buy 2 CB, and then why those people think they will be our starting, regular CB pairing. I wouldn't rule out Rojo, he is imo there for the long-term and you won't find much better attainable CB's out there of that age. And most importantly, don't rule out Smalling. He has his flaws, but he is improving year in, year out, and no one knows how far he could go because he has his head right on his shoulders. It's strange to say but I kind of feel "comfortable" when Smalling is playing, maybe because we don't have yet a world class CB and I am easily satisfied, or maybe because he is actually more reliable than what the pundits say. Smalling will be a vital part of our team for the long-term, make no mistake about that, because he offers an athletic dimension to our defence, which as we know is vital in some games.

It's not a forgone conclusion that two new CBs are coming in by any stretch. I think it'll be just the one - but I think that's also partially dependent on how Jones and Smalling shape till the end of the season. I think the club would like to keep the British head count as high as possible too.

Rojo is good i agree but Smalling needs more then one or two performances to be convincing. Smalling has made so many dumb decisions its unbelievable, that said he should stick around, maybe not as a starter yet though also whats the chances of Evans going this summer. i don't even like Jones's chances (unfortunately cause i think he's better than smalling has been until recently)

Great question there. People tend to forget that we already have top CB in Rojo and Smalling + additional Jones, Evans, McNair, Blackett. It's like you always think the other lane is moving faster. I get the fascination with Hummels (I'd love for him to sign with us) but is it smart to dismiss top players who are already PL proven? I don't think so, for me depending on who leaves we'll only need to fill in that spot, but I do believe that Smalling and Rojo are going to be our future pairing and in that case we'll need a back up CB

I'm really liking the idea of a Smalling/Rojo pairing right now, Smalling has always had a good level of ability and been the most talented of himself and Jones and also the most reliable. At one point I'd have said a top quality, proven and experienced central defender was a must but I'm not so sure anymore, think other areas are more important than central defence right now: right back and a central midfielder.
I suppose if we can get someone of the Hummels level and experience it would be hard to turn down but my preference is more towards a younger, hungrier central defender. Varane or even Stones would do for me.
One thing is for sure, we need 1 central defender at the most.

I bet Kenwright would want Varane money for Stones.
Varane's a great option if he wants out of Madrid and certainly more pace than Hummels.

Yeah you're right about the sort of money they'd want for Stones, also shows why premier league clubs prefer to shop abroad!

Smalling is growing on me, let's see how he does until the end of the season. Still think a top quality CB is needed.
Certainly starting to question other areas of need though, Blind at LB for competition with Shaw, striker if we are sticking with one up front.
Van Gaal will know what he wants, I'm confident that he'll add to the areas we need but who they will be, no fecking clue..
This summer is going to be very exciting, last few have been kinda nervy.. The future is bright.

Pogba, Hummels, Depay, Alves on a free. Summer done, business completed by July.

Was never Alves' biggest fan when he was in his prime, so I wouldn't have him here now. Prefer us to go for Clyne.

As would I but there isn't a bottomless pit of cash and Valencia's grown on me as a right back. I think a shorter term option would suit us for a bit.
Go for Clyne once there are less pressing issues elsewhere.

I see your point but as I said I've never really rated Alves anyway. So if we're not going to pay out for someone like Clyne this summer I'd sooner we just stuck with what we've got in that area.
Was only a couple of years ago that people couldn't believe Alves was still getting in the Brazil side and Rafa couldn't even get a sniff. I personally don't think Alves is any better than Valencia and Rafa.

To be fair, that's the one we should break the bank for, if he actually is open to a move of course.
