Are you calling him Jaime on purpose or is it a typo? Di Maria, Mata and Herrera sadly can't all play because he wants Rooney in midfield unless he changes his system, so one has to miss out but I agree we should play our own game rather than worrying about the opposition too much. I'm confident for top four, we could even grab 2nd place

Guess I've been in Spain too long it's how his name is spent here. This season VG is a little short on options so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but if I see Rooney next season as a CM then I will crucify VG. It's true Rooney does have a lot of energy but that doesn't make up for his obvious shortcomings to make a complete CM. Rooney's numbers prove he's one of the best strikers in the PL. He's normally lethal in front of goal so watching him labour game after game in CM is starting to make me cringe. I've been saying it since the start of the season that VG should be playing his best players in their best positions, it's only logic. Rooney or Herrera as CM shouldn't even be asked as a question never mind given as the answer. Second place I think is pushing it a little. A lot will depend on todays game. If we win comfortably then i can see us kick on and not have any worries, if we win uncomfortably then then we still have a chance. If we lose uncomfortably then I wouldn't count my chickens on the 4th spot. I still have a feeling Southampton will finish in the top 4 although just by saying that they'll probably go on a losing streak the next 10 games. I've just jinxed their season

Just posted an article in the LVG thread, from that it doesn't seem like Roo will be upfront anytime soon, I'd rather see him at the tip of the diamond than this deep role he's in but to be fair he's done a decent job in there just needs to work on his short passing. With Rooney's future looking to be in midfield it makes the summer even more interesting.
The race for top four will be tight, lots more to come but with European football getting back under way it will be interesting to see how Arsenal, Spuds and co can cope.

I won't be surprised to see big names going in the Summer with Rooney moving further up field again, with a completely reshaped midfield. But I guess who they can get in will determine that as much as anything.

I'd love to see how McNair would to as a RB against a PL side, although in his interview after Cambridge he said something like that was an exception. Who knows with Van Gaal...

Ideally he's on the bench and I'd throw him on for that last 15/20 minutes if we need a goal. But seems we all know Herrera isn't going to be starting any time soon I'm being realistic and expecting Fellaini to start, so talking about how best to use him.

He'll go for an energy freak CM, Vidal type (not necessarily him), maybe even two and then stick him/them up in front of Blind while Herrera is fighting for his place under the sun with di Maria and Mata (maybe even Rooney as well) like the man said himself. Tough shit for Ander there...

The spare parts there are Mata (no pace - why Mou got rid in the first place). Fellaini (obvious). Herrera. Herrera would stay as squad player, when he settles, he's more dynamic than the other two, can play CM and do Mata's role in behind as back up to Rooney. That's how I'd got it worked out.

Yeah, if paired with lets say Blind and Vidal or Pogba in a 3 man midfield, he'd be great assuming he continues to improve and settles well. That'd be a perfectly balanced midfield with a tons of energy.

I agree about Mata, arguably as much of a spare part as Fellaini for me. His lack of pace really does hinder the side as well as his own game. Every aspect of his game is just too slow and ponderous, yes he's good at finding space in the area to score a goal and yes when he's not under pressure he can find a killer pass but this is the Premier League, having time on the ball in and around the area is something that doesn't happen too frequently. His lack of pace is also evident in terms of him losing possession, he's always one of the easiest players to dispossess because he can't move his feet quick enough to respond to a defender putting pressure on the ball, he really has frustrated me a lot this season, it's got to the point where I'd rather see Fellaini start instead of him.

Yeah I do agree that Mata has been pretty wank this season but I put that down to the system we are playing more than the player himself. If next season VG wants his attacking players doubling back and defending deep in our own half then I can't see any place for Mata at United. If we can sign CMs to steady the ship without our attacking players having to defend so deeply then Mata could still shine. I don't think it's any coincidence that in his first few seasons at Chelski he was the PLs player with most assists and he scored his fair share of goals as well. Give him licence to roam, a bit like Silva does at Shity without defensive duties then we will have a player capable of changing games instead of a player who runs around like a headless chicken who doesn't look like he's enjoying his game.

It's just not enough, he's a specialist player and a team needs to be built around him, not the other way round. I doubt LvG is going to have that, it's the opposite of what his teams are about and what he's looking for. Both him and Fellaini would be absolutely perfect in the right sides though, I think we'll lose money on Mata but Fellaini less so. I agree with Jamie's sentiments, I think Fellaini has impressed me more this season than Mata. ...........but then again the benchmark of last season was lower than crocodile piss so I might be a bit skewed.

Which means no Fellaini.
United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Shaw, Blind, Rooney, Januzaj, Di Maria, Falcao, van Persie.
Valdes, Smalling, McNair, Fellaini, Herrera, Mata, Wilson.
I don't think you can say he's playing it safe.
