Literally it's impossible to know what way we are going to play irrespective of the opponent. When we penetrated these tonight at the very end they were hanging on. Leave it that late then you're always running the risk of them seeing off our purple patch and getting lucky as they did. Everton away wouldn't have been much easier than any of these fixtures. We took them apart in no time because we went at them from the start. Not going to know what a team's defence is like until they're put to the sword. Left it too little too late tonight. Take every game on it's individuals merits on the day. When we drive at them tonight didn't think they were anything special even with our 2nd string

I think we try and play the same way every game. Some games are more successful than others. Boro defended deep and put nearly everyone behind the ball early on. It's hard to create chances and find a breakthrough in these sorts of games. My biggest disappointment tonight wasn't the way the game went in terms of the flow of the game as it was what I expected it to be. The biggest disappointment was not taking the chances we had.
Everton was different and they played into our hands. Tried to press, tried to push forward and the just got done by incisive attacking movements. We were by no means gung ho against them. Just more cutting and incisive.
It doesn't help when you have important attacking positions taken up by players seriously out of form either. Memphis tonight, Rooney for half of tonight and most of the season. You can't build attacks and sustain pressure when you have guys like that who can't retain possession or find a red shirt with a pass. Everything either of them tried tonight failed.
I come back to an earlier point and my biggest concern with this team right now (I'm starting to sound like a broken record), Rooney is really effecting the performances of this side in a negative way. I think he's simply not good enough to be a guaranteed starter, week in, week out anymore. We can talk about trying to find his best position but as far as I'm concerned in current form he doesn't deserve to be anywhere near this starting 11, especially in the system(s) LVG uses. We have a better number 9, we have multiple better number 10's. Then you get people suggesting he plays midfield, he's not even close to the standard of midfielders we now have.
He can't make simple short passes, he can't shoot, he's starting to look weak and he's slow physically and mentally. He still works his socks off but that isn't good enough for Manchester United. Can you think of a player for any of the top sides who is consistently playing as bad as Rooney and still has such an important role for the side? Because I can't.
I genuinely think he's finished being an elite level player and this isn't a knee-jerk reaction to this seasons form. I've felt he's been declining for the last few seasons, the season Fergie left was the real beginning of it. For me, every time he starts a game for us at the minute we're playing a weakened side.

Rather focus on the positives. Lingard and Andreas were very solid. Looed as if they belonged there. Both have really good feet especially in and around the box. I would not be against lingard starting against palace on the weekend either.

I'd be tempted to go for Lingard at the weekend as well. Palace are excellent on the wings and Lingard will provide that extra help for the right back.

Depends on how long it drags on for, he is definitely on the wane (ha) and it could all fall to bits for him anytime within the next 18 months but that doesn't mean he's gone now, this minute. All his attributes are still there except his acceleration has gone, he can still keep pace and has his strength but the acceleration is the first stage of losing it and how you tell he's hit the downward curve. Happens to every player and his legs could go at any point form now.
Him and Memphis are going through an identical spell where you just can't kick a ball right, trouble is, that's two of your three main attackers who are shit and it's killing us. Memphis being shit is bad enough when we're light up front but Wayne kills it. Can't do anything else but sit it out and spread the misery because if you put Martial up front for a prolonged period, use Young, etc, etc, then you're piling the pressure on Martial and risk him going the same way.
On the game; if you don't finish you'll pay the price. Simples. Ref was genuinely shit but we had the chances to win the game outright. It was just one of those nights where you get dumped out.

Laser fair enough for Rooney's, but what was Young doing taking an identical sort of effort after seeing Rooney's saved on that side?

Dunno but what puzzled me was who picked the takers and order when you have Herrera on the pitch? You'd put him in the first three.

Coulda sworn Herrera came on later, bout right then if he didn't. Still, I don't know what Young or Carrick were doing tbh.

Our 3 subs were Rooney, Young and Martial. The penos were really atrocious, the lack of composure from seasoned top level pros was astounding. Like I've said they were completely shown up by a kid making just his 2nd competitive start who calmly slotted his peno into the corner.

I actually saw a lot of positives in this game, Pereira and Lingard being the greatest satisfaction.
On the other hand, Memphis is showing exactly why I didn't want to sign him up in the first place. I know it's just him being young, etc. but I couldn't believe how poor he was. Yes, he's a great dribbler but his end-product and decision making is equally poor. Rooney is Rooney and in the form he is in now he ust doesn't deserve to be first choice. Right now he is lucky we're short of a proper world class striker. He wouldn't play in most big teams. It's about time we stopped kidding ourselves.
LVG is defnitely on the right track in my books. We just lack a beast upfront.

The sad part about the penalties is that you could see Rooney missing, part of you still hopes he scores, but you're not surprised at all when he misses. The other two were just shocking. But if it wasn't for the penalties and our atrocious finishing, I quite enjoyed the game.
As for Memphis, apparently the time on the bench didn't do him much good, so let's try something else - give him some 15-20 minutes each game, get him back to match fitness and get him passing again.
