That's at least something, still looks as good a player as he did when he first went into the u21's.

I cannot fathom it unless they will be involved at the weekend which I think is unlikely, I mean for the right side we only have Mata and Young so thought Lingard would have a real shot unless we play Pereira there. Wilson I just don't understand what's going on with him.
Hopefully Varela and Pereira start at least.
Romero, Varela, Smalling, Blind, Darmian, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Pereira, Fellaini, Young, Rooney.

Just a bit disappointing that the young English guys aren't gonna get a go. I don't get why Lingard wasn't sold if he doesn't have plans for him. I know it's still early on in the season but it would be ideal to have him start tonight in what will still be a pretty experienced side.

I understand the Wilson situation just a tad more. We play 1 man up front we'd have to sacrifice a senior player from the bench to have him on the there. Not saying I agree with it but I understand more why he won't be involved as he's still very young and pretty inexperienced.
Lingard has done everything he can possibly do. He's been out on loan and always been successful, judging from what LVG has said in the past he does rate him and he's now nearing an age where he either gets games or leaves. It makes absolutely no sense to not have him involved tonight, especially considering he's pretty versatile and could occupy any of the attacking positions.

Actually fuck that, Wilson has done more than enough to warrant a place in the squad tonight as well, it's bullshit.

Just looks like he's taking no chances and wants the best possible start in all competitions, have to see what he's like if we start looking comfortable as a complete unit I guess.

Well done Daily Star, you've exceeded your own level of stupidity.

Didn't know Varela is already 22. It's been a few years since we bought him though.

was he loaned out to some other teams? Completely forgotten about him...just like Angelo Henriquez until we sold him.

He was at Castilla, Real Madrid's B team last season. Zidane was supposedly keen to keep him but a move didn't materialise. I've always been impressed with him, natural and intelligent right back. Quick and equally as good at either end of the pitch. I've been surprised he hasn't been used sooner to be honest.

how did he fare over there? Must been good since Zidane wanted to keep him I suppose. He should be challenging Darmian and Toni V for the RB spot this year.

I struggle to even laugh at things like the Varela/Thorpe picture. These are people who are paid to write about football, pisses me off no end that they're allowed to get away with such a basic error that can be viewed by thousands of people.
It makes it even worse that the picture was probably sourced by some office assistant, then included by a writer before being checked by an editor and probably seen by and headline writer as well. 4 tits.
As for tonight, I'm a bit fed up by van Gaal's comments about Lingard and Wilson, even more fed up that I had to give up my ticket, and then completely fed up that this is the first United cup game since the dawn of time that isn't on the tele.

Very disappointed but not at all surprised by the exclusion of our, "youngsters " I'm a great fan of Mata but I'd be the first to admit he's hardly set the world on fire so far this season. Tonight would of been the perfect night to try Lingard in his position. If he can't get a game in the COC then what chance has he in the future? I really will be getting the knives out for VG if he doesn't get a fair shot. What I can't stand about VG is he keeps on about giving youth a chance. He's probably right if they meet the following criteria. 1) They're Dutch 2) They cost a shit load of money 3) They are an extremely, exceptional, rare talent 4) Forced into it because of injuries
Would Varela get a game tonight if it wasn't for injuries? Would he bollocks. What the he'll is going on with Wilson? The poor fella can't do anymore than he's already done. To give VG his dues he does looked to have found a rare talent in Martial but I'd like to see how he reacts when Martial has a lean spell because it could be that Martial is the only thing keeping the wolves away from VGs door.

What I can't understand is that he's spoken about the pair of them in very positive words, especially Lingard. I think he even said himself that Lingard would play a good amount of football for us this season. If that's the case you'd have though he'd be playing tonight.
The only thing I think is that the U21's have barely had a game so far so the pair of them haven't played a game yet this season (or at least I can't remember them playing). They may be lacking match fitness. Clutching at straws maybe but I just can't fathom a reasonable excuse as to why they wouldn't be involved tonight.

Can't work it out myself Jamie. If it was a group game in the CL or a top of the table clash then it would be totally understandable but how are they supposed to get match fit if they don't play any matches other than an U21s game every 2 months? I know there are no low pressure games at United but it doesn't get much lower than the opening rounds of the COC. It's not the end of the world if we got knocked out because these are the games we should be giving to fringe players or U21s. He plays with a full squad then he's just adding extra pressure to himself and to the team. VG could of done himself a lot of favours playing them tonight. I don't like taking cheap digs at VG but maybe it's his ego getting in the way. He doesn't have a lot of time (supposedly) before he retires. He will want to win things, whatever the cost and at the minute that cost seems to be at the expense of our youngsters. They will get games. Rooney could pull a hammy at any time. Martial can't play every game. Memphis is still learning and Mata's form at the minute is questionable but it does irk me that they will be playing more by default than by their own merit.
