I'm assuming old 'Magic Merse' has seen about as much of Club Brugge as I have, his opinion is nonsense.

I've seen a lot of Brugge in my lifetime. It's very simple: we're miles ahead of them in every aspect, but that doesn't mean anything if we're complacent or not playing well.
If we take this tie seriously there shouldn't be any problem. But any complacency can be punished. In fact, this tie is only ours to lose.

Unchanged team.
Fellaini on the bench.

Not a bad thing to be fair. Looks like we're taking it very seriously. Hopefully we can play well and end this tie tonight.

Glad Adnan starts again, no point throwing him and letting him gain confidence by bagging a goal, only to drop him to the bench for the next game. I think we're gonna see a good performance tonight. Memphis to score 2 quality goals in the first half.

Good to have European football back at Old Trafford, went behind through an unlucky own goal which turned out to be their first and last chance. 2 excellent goals from Memphis and some good moments of team football besides, the defence were solid again. Was expecting us to beat them comprehensively in the 2nd half but it didn't quite happen. I'll take Fellaini's last second header though, eases the pressure 2-1 would've given us.

MOTM: stats wise Depay undoubtedly. But my MOTM were Schneiderlin and Smalling, both absolutely perfect in their role, Smalling bullying them, Schneiderlin doing everything right offering composure, presence, & strength.
Very disappointed by the performance of some players though. Rooney was transparent again, so was Mata who didn't influence the game as much as he should: we were virtually deprived of our right flank: no pace and no power. Two goals and one assist from the left flank, and it showed as our play was a bit unbalanced. I hope we sign Pedro to fill that gap on the right flank and rebalance our penetration.
Pleased with Chicharito's and Fellaini's short performances: you could see their desire and will to do well, and Fellaini got his goal already. People wrote him off but he will be vital for us again this season I have no doubt. Yes he may be one-dimensional at times, but he adds aggressivity and direct goal threat. We're much harder to bully/beat when he is on the pitch.
There is still one massive problem though: we're realy short upfront with Rooney in that form.

It wasn't great from Rooney again. Dropping too deep even before Hernandez came on, his touch wasn't as bad as vs Villa but he didn't do an awful lot besides a nice pass to set up Memphis for his hat-trick (which he missed). I really think we need to be looking at bringing in another centre forward now, convinced by it. Like I've said I don't think Rooney's done but we're relying on him too heavily.
Mata hasn't been great at all. Besides the assist vs Villa his all round game was shoddy. If the manager is desperate to keep Rooney in the side I wouldn't be completely against Rooney dropping to number 10 in this system behind a top drawer striker with Memphis left and Pedro right.

Yeah Wayne keeps dropping too deep, I think we'd get away with having runners going beyond him in Memphis, Januzaj hopefully Pedro. Chicha looked sharp as well but a new striker would be the ideal. Rooney did look sharper today, the goals will come at the weekend for him.
I think we can just about get away with CB and striker this season, if Dave goes defo need a GK, Romero lucky tonight.

I am still not convinced by LVG's 4-2-3-1 system though because I think we're missing a key player for that system in CAM. There is too much space bewteen CM and attack, and no player takes the rsponsibility to link up the play, as every forward sticks to the opposition's lowest defensive line.
If LVG wants to play that system, he has to find a player like Barkley or Coutinho, who can collect the ball from our CM and carry it quickly and unpredictably into the final third. Januzaj imo is more of a wide attacker or a forward, but I struggle to see how he could make that CAM position his own.
But anyway, with the players we have, I don't understand how we're not playing 4-3-3:
-- Depay - Rooney - Pedro -- ----------- Herrera -------- Shaw -- Schweini --- Darmian ---------- Schneidi -------- ----- Blind -- Smalling ---- ---------- new GK ----------

Put it one way if Rooney starts as a striker in a front 4 with Pedro, Memphis and Januzaj he will have absolutely no excuses there, plenty of pace, creativity and if he's doing his bit he will get chances.
