Ancelotti on the market, Klopp on the market, now Carver. All the managers of big clubs will be looking over their shoulder.

Think Mcclaren is a very good appointment. I've always liked him, think he had a tough time with England and in the lions den of being an England manager he just got slaughtered. He's always very interesting and convincing to listen to though. Think he'll do well there although it's a shame it's at a shit head club like Newcastle.

not so sure. think its a bad move actually. he isn't that good of a manager. he's better than carver but is he a guy who will make them top half, unlikely. and thats where a club of that size should be (along with Villa, at least Sherwood can probably get them there)

Well he took FC Twente to their first ever Eredivise. He also won the League Cup with Boro. Then there's the fact he was a big part of that treble winning side in 99'. I think he's an intelligent football man and that's what those cockmongers need right now.

McClaren's a weird case - in a relatively short management career he's been both brilliant and very poor in his various jobs.
On the one hand he's one of very few English managers who've won a trophy in the last 15 years and one of very few British coaches with a success story abroad, in a Venn diagram of the two he's probably on his own.
But his reputation will forever be tarnished by his time with England, then you have his poor time at Wolfsburg and Forest plus this season's collapse at Derby when they could and should have won the league but dropped way down the league in the last 10/15 games. I have some sympathy for him with England, it's a horrible job for anyone but at the same time, the 2008 Champions League final featured 10 English starters (one admittedly retired from England duty) plus Gerrard and Carragher in the semi finals. How that season could close with a major tournament that England hadn't qualified for is quite shocking.
I hope he does well, I'll always be fond of him because of his incredible highs at United, but I'm never quite sure which version of McClaren you get. He'll need to be at his very best to control that circus of a club.

Being manager of a club side is 100 times more different than a National side especially the England national side. No doubting he did a poor job with England but so did Sven (even though I always thought he did a decent job) who had a very good club record and so will every poor fucker who gets the job in the future. Then there's Capello. I'll never judge a manager by how well he does or doesn't do at international football.
I think the biggest issue of whether he'll do well there is if he's given the chance and whether the club and their fans aim above their level. As far as I'm concerned if they finish around 8-12th he's done his job and they've hit their level but no doubts the fans will be after him.

I don't think that any manager, no matter who would ever please that lot. Jamie is right that they are a mid-table outfit at best. There fans are delusional, just because you fill a ground every home game does not make you a big club, especially when there is fuck all other football in the town and it's the only entertainment available to football fans.
