3-5-2 again then by the look of it. Herrera not even on the bench but Rafa is back in the squad.

I never wanted Manchester United to be second to anybody. Only the best would be good enough

Not happy with the performance in attack today, not enough urgency, intent, inventiveness or most importantly speed in our build up play. When we got the equaliser we massively upped our game and for around 20 minutes looked like we'd go on and score 2 or 3, they get a man sent off and we struggle to create another chance after that, just not good enough.
That being said, Young played well on the left and his play for the goal was fantastic, great cross and a superb headed finish from Falcao which will hopefully give him confidence.
Didn't think the defence played too bad but I just hate this 3-5-2/5-3-2 formation, especially against this sort of opposition, no matter what formation we played we were going to dominate the game and I think it would have payed to have Carrick in the centre of the park for the whole game. Alot of the ball but our best passer playing too deep to influence the game is the main reason we looked so toothless in that first half. I just don't get why he persists in the formation I really don't. I hope when we have Rafa and Shaw back fit he'll switch back to a 4 at the back as I'm just praying the only reason he doesn't trust it is because of the defensive naivety that Young and Valencia would undoubtedly bring to playing as an out and out fullback.
Fletcher was atrocious and rightly substituted. Mata was incredibly fortunate to play 90 minutes, he was a passenger today, didn't influence the game one iota and is just too slow to the ball for me and also gets bullied off it too easily. He's a luxury player who's better arriving on the end of a ball in the box to score a goal than he is at playing a midfield role trying to influence the game.
Ok it wasn't the worst performance in the world, we dominated the game, Villa have been tough to beat this season as well but what good is all that possession if you can't create enough chances to win the game?
Not really a disappointing performance and result, more of a frustrating one.
Hoping for much better on Boxing Day.

Could have won this match... WTH was LVG thinking! Seriously, I am really frustrated with a lot of his decisions this season. Today's one takes the cake. A few decisions cost us the win.
1) why did he replace RVP with Di Maria? It's not like RVP was having a poor game... Yes, he missed a chance in front of goal but why swap him for someone who has not played in the last 3 weeks. All this while, he was talking about match fit ... Di Maria didn't look match fit to me.
We were attacking, the momentum was with us. RVP and Falcao were linking well. Once Di Maria came on, we lost all the impetus and drive.
2) why did he swap Young to the right when he was giving Matthew Lowton a hard time on the left? Young was having the upper hand every time he runs at Lowton..not to mention the assist he had for the Falcao goal. As the saying goes, don't fix something if it ain't broke.
3) Why did he put Wilson in? Putting in Wilson caused him to make the tactical switch by putting Young on to the right. I have nothing against Wilson but from the past few matches I have watched him played, he offered nothing to us upfront apart from running, running and running. he has the talent but he has a lot to learn. I don't think he's ready yet.
That's just my 2 cents. Don't really care if anyone agrees or disagrees with me. Really pissed right now. LVG is to blame for costing us the win.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "Very frustrating. I think we gave two points away. We did not start well enough and because of that they could score a goal. We kept the ball well in the first half but we did nothing with the ball. In the second half was better but not as effective as usual. But that is football, sometimes you cannot force that.
"I cannot judge the sending off, I haven't seen it. I saw the tackle and I think it was a normal tackle and suddenly it was a red card.
"I'm disappointed because also in the first half we were the better team and when that's the case you have to win. But we know that in our first seven games we were also the better team but we did not win many times."

I agree with both Jaime and Eric. For me it's quite simple. We are not a 3-5-2, tiki taki with no end product team. If we want to play tiki taki (something I don't have a problem with) then we need to play with a lot more speed and decisiveness. What's the point of having all that possession only to have no end product? VG once again for me was a disappointment. If he wants to succeed at United then he has to learn a different way of playing. It might succeed in Europe but the PL isn't the place to keep experimenting. When Di Maria came on I wanted him to sit in midfield to control the game with Rooney pushing up which is only logical considering that Rooney is a better forward than CM player and Di Maria is better sitting deeper orchestrating play but once again we had our best players playing in positions that don't really suit them. Playing fletcher once again showed a lot of negativity the same as when he plays Fellaini. We need creative players in the middle not cart horses. As Eric pointed out. Changing Young to the right was an atrocious decision. He had the beating of Lowton all day long and was our best chance of getting something from the game so why the fuck change it? Sorry. I really am trying to see what plans VG has for our future but it just escapes me. Of course injuries has something to do with it but we have a talented enough squad to take on any team if we play to our strengths. Something VG refuses to do.
