Under-18s: Everton 2 Manchester United 0
United conceded a goal in each half at Finch Farm as they slipped to a fifth Barclays Under-18 Premier League defeat of the season.
But with a touch of luck the Reds may have salvaged something from the excursion following an improved second half performance.
Paul McGuinness’s side were returning to league action for the first time in four weeks and could barely have been presented with a sterner test than a trip to Merseyside and Everton.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah, signed from Dutch giants Ajax in the summer, was in the side to make his debut along with fellow youngster Jake Kenyon.
No matter the league position or current form, games against the Toffees are always keenly fought and well contested encounters.
Everton started the game in better shape than United with a lively and determined early spell of attacking football that suggested they meant business.
The Reds looked sluggish and it was no real surprise when, in the 14th minute, the home side opened the scoring.
Where United were concerned it was a poor goal to give away as Kieran Dowell shrugged off the attention of several defenders before pushing the ball over the line.
United were unlucky not to grab the equaliser a few minutes later when Callum Gribbin’s curling shot thudded against the upright.
Everton’s team stayed out during the interval, but McGuinness took his charges to the sanctuary of the changing room.
No doubt to impart a few well-chosen words of guidance and encouragement ahead of the second forty-five minutes.
Whatever those words were they certainly made an impact for United returned to the fray as a completely transformed proposition. And for fifteen minutes they looked more than capable of taking some reward from the game.
Ro-Shaun Williams made one charging run upfield that looked hugely promising but having exchanged passes with Cribbin and Ruairi Croskery he just failed to get in a shot before Everton keeper Mateusz Hewelt claimed the ball.
Charlie Scott also went close as did Fosu-Mensah when he struck a fearsome drive that certainly warmed Hewelt’s hands.
United were still in with a chance of picking up at least a point until the 81st minute when Everton full-back James Yates struck to double his side’s advantage and put the game beyond United’s reach.
UNITED: Henderson, Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Scott, Fosu-Mensah, Kenyon (Johnson 86); Gribbin; Croskery (Redmond 58). Subs not used: Warren, Dorrington (Gk)

McGuinness: Rashford has turned a corner
Marcus Rashford will be expected to lead from the front in Manchester United's Barclays Under-18 Premier League clash with Liverpool at Altrincham's J. Davidson Stadium on Friday night.
The talented 17-year-old has taken on extra responsibility in attack following injury to Demetri Mitchell and coach Paul McGuinness feels he has turned a corner in terms of learning new facets of the game.
McGuinness feels other key members of his squad, including Axel Tuanzebe, Joe Riley and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson are also capable of rubber-stamping their own progress with good performances against the Merseysiders, and also against Bury in the FA Youth Cup on 16 December.
As Mitchell will be out until after Christmas, the onus will be on Rashford to stretch opposing defences with his speed and, with three goals in the two fixtures at Altrincham, he will be a major threat to Liverpool.
"Marcus has made big strides recently," McGuinnness revealed to ManUtd.com. "I think all of them in this age group are maturing physically and mentally and I can see that in front of my own eyes. From the start of the season to now, he’s made big strides.
"Quite a few players have but Marcus was one of those we were talking about. Last year, he played as a schoolboy up at Newcastle and we said afterwards: ‘You just didn’t know how hard it is to play at this level and play professional football, and how much you have to give yourself physically'.
"He didn’t realise what this football was about – he felt it was nice to get hold of the ball and play but didn’t realise you’ve got to run up, run back and do all that running. Now he has mentally turned a corner and was making some fantastic runs down the channel and over the top in the previous games and putting in a lot of work. He’s turned the corner on that and has got a lot of potential physically as well.
"Quite a few of the group have and it is just starting to dawn on all of them exactly what potential they have got, which is good. Axel at the back has really good athleticism and is another one turning the corner.
"Another who is very close to having a professional mentality is Joe Riley as he’s very consistent every day in training but he just needs a bit more of a push and these games will give him that. You have to go that bit further and he’s certainly capable of that now.
"Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has got all the equipment to do it – he’s tall, strong and can run and play but he just needs that extra drive to push himself to be a professional."
Another player who can shine in the fixture, which has free entry for all spectators, is Timothy Fosu-Mensah. The recent recruit from Ajax could show his versatility by starting in defence after previously appearing in central midfield.
"Timothy is very strong and powerful with very good acceleration over short distances, whether to win the ball back or make breaks forward with the ball," added McGuinness. "I thought he played very well in the last game at Altrincham and gave us another dimension with his simple passes and he was quick over the ground to win it back or drive forward.
"For this game, he may have to play at the back as Ro-Shaun Williams has got a little injury but we’ll have to see what the make-up of the team is. Timothy can do both roles and can probably switch during the game if we need him to."

U18s: Stoke 0 United 2
Manchester United’s Under-18s returned to league action with a good win over the Stoke City at Clayton Wood on Saturday.
It was a lively and impressive display, almost in spite of the energy exerted in overcoming Bury in the FA Youth Cup at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Marcus Rashford grabbed both goals in the first half as Paul McGuinness’ men triumphed in what is traditionally one of hardest fixtures of the season.
United got off to a great start and could easily have been two goals to the good within the first four minutes. Ro-Shaun Williams fired over and then, in the very next attack, Joe Riley went very close to finding the net.
It was a bright and breezy opening from the young Reds, (or Blues as it was on this occasion), which suited the conditions at Stoke's training complex. United continued to hold the balance of play and in the 17th minute broke the deadlock.
Defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson joined the attack and when his left wing cross arrived in the area Rashford was on hand to place the ball past Stoke keeper Daniel Gyollai. United fully deserved the lead and barely three minutes later had doubled the advantage.
Joe Riley’s pass from the right was met by the Reds’ in-form no.9, who headed home at the second attempt after his first effort had struck the bar. The two-goal lead almost became three in the 32nd minute when Oliver Rathbone hit a rasping shot which thudded against the Stoke crossbar.
It was certainly a splendid first half for United and the young charges could be well pleased with the performance as the warmth of the dressing room beckoned.
The teams were greeted with a rain shower as they took the field for the second half, but the elements did little to alter the flow of the game. United continued to have the upper hand and in the 51st minute Timothy Fosu-Mensah almost increased the lead after receiving the ball from Rashford.
Dean Henderson hadn’t been too busy during the game but he did well when called into action to prevent Julian N’Goy’s shot from reaching its intended destination. The game began to level out as the second half progressed but clear chances were pretty rare.
Stoke threatened to reduce the deficit with a goal-bound shot from the left but Williams was there to clear the danger.
United: Henderson; Reid, Williams, Tuanzebe, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Scott, Fosu-Mensah, Rathbone; Redmond (Hamilton 84); Rashford (Dearnley 88). Subs not used: Byrne (Gk), Gribbin, McTominay

Really liking the look of all the defenders, all very confident and comfortable on the ball, looking to pass it forward and get the attack going all the time.

Fantastic headed clearance off the line from Hull after Riley got in at the back post and directed his shot towards the top corner, a first teamer would have been proud of that, United looking dangerous.

3-0 win and a dominant performance, a few good displays but the captain Tuanzebe looks like a player with huge potential, Gribbin and both fullbacks, Borthwick-Jackson and Reid also impressed me. Be interested to see if any of them cement a place in the u21's before the end of the season.

I didn't see any of it, spent the first 20 minutes looking for a stream to no avail. Sounded like a good performance to watch, according to a few on Twitter Mensah looked the standout player.
I've liked Gribbin every time I've seen anything of him, he's inconsistent and very one footed but he just looks a very classy player on the ball. Plus he only turned 16 3 weeks ago, to be doing what he's doing at U18 level already is very impressive. He was only 5 months old when United did the Treble!

Mensah was decent as well but Tuanzebe impressed me the most. Looks like a leader, even if at a young age still, reminds me of Rio in terms of how confident he is on the ball which is complimented by actual quality on the ball, wouldn't be surprised to see him play a few games in midfield for the U21's.
Gribbin is definitely the natural raw talent of the bunch though.

2-1 United win against Blackburn
I think that's 5 in a row. Not a beautiful performance, but we were comfortably the better side.
