Watched the game back, De Gea didn't have to make any world class saves, he made a lot of decent stops but not really anything you wouldn't have expected him to save, the only good attempt on goal from them ended up in the back of the net from Giroud. They have to be more disappointed with their performance than us with ours, if that was a Mourinho side everyone would have hailed him for his genius at getting results, so LVG deserves credit for it.
We defended well and were well organised at the back despite being a bit sloppy and nonchalant in possession, Arsenal were always going to win the midfield battle and have more possession, we always looked dangerous in attack and on the counter attack, it was a pretty perfect away performance in the end, pretty similar to our away performances in Europe over the years.

The thing that pisses me off about VG is he doesn't want to learn from his mistakes. We tried the 3-5-2 system at the start of the season and it was plain for all to see it just didn't work. So what does VG do? Plays a 3-5-2 with 2 very inexperienced players and Smalling although who had a good game is always prone to mistakes. The first half hour Arsenil were picking us off at will because our wing backs weren't offering any protection. If Giroud had of played from the start we would of been 2-3 goals behind but luckily they were more toothless than us. In CM we were outplayed for a majority of the game. Why Herrera didn't play as a 3 man CM is beyond me. Our only other creative player, Di Maria was playing way too far forward to have any influence on the game. We had one shot on target in almost 100 minutes of the game which is becoming home and away, a very bad habit of ours. For me the only credit VG deserves was in taking off RVP because for me his tactics were awful in the first half. The second half changed because we got more bodies behind the ball and hit them on the break which was successful because Arsenil were suicidal playing with their CBs in our own half. Nope, VG definitely won't be on my Xmas card list until his team plays with some shape and fluidity about it because at the minute we just seem to be running around like headless chickens without having any real idea of how to play as a team. But that is difficult to do when we have our most creative players sitting on the bench and only getting cameo performances now and again.

Arguably our worst performance of the season overall in terms of ball retention and attacking play but did what needed to be done to get the win. The performance was understandable when you consider how many players we had as doubts before the game. I can understand why we went back the the 3-5-2, I don't really like it but it made sense considering the opposition and the players missing.
He basically played it the same way he set the Dutch up against Spain and sure, Arsenal had a lot of shots but the only one you'd really call a great chance was the Wilshere one and that came due to De Gea's poor kick. Overall, I think we held the shape together pretty well and just waited for Arsenal to do what they keep doing, their awareness of the counter is literally zero, and Di Maria was played up front to exploit that.
I see Hammy's already had a whinge though, but in other news grass is green and water is wet

But wouldn't it be boring if everyone said we didn't play that well but a great 3 points? Starting with a 3-5-2 really did surprise me. We have never played well with this system so i don't know why VG thought this time would be any different. The first half hour we were ripped to shreds basically because players didn't know the role they had to play. Valencia and Shaw were caught too many times out of position, Blackett had a stinker because he didn't know what he had to do, McNair didn't look any where near as assured as he has done and surprisingly it was Smalling who kept it all together. Arsenil on their day (luckily their days are getting fewer) are one of the best attacking sides in England. It would of made more sense to play a more solid formation like a 4-3-3. That way the defense know their job, we would be more solid and creative in CM, which in turn means our forwards would get better service. VG seems to be tinkering too much. I agree that in any team the first priority should be not to concede goals but he seems to have taken it to a new level by stopping all our creative play. One shot on target in nearly 100 minutes just isn't good enough. The game yesterday was once again crying out for Herrera. A situation that is starting to worry me. Bringing on Young only to take him off again. Who does that? 3 points? Great. Smalling surprisingly good, De Gea another good performance, Rooney looked up for it and played a captains role but until VG stops faffing about and sticks with a formation everyone understands then we could just turn into George Grahams 1-0 to the Arsenil and with the attacking, creative talent he has at his disposal that really would be a sin.

I think my biggest problem with the game was that we gave them too much possession - something that we were getting used to under Van Gaal. I understand why he wanted to go with a more defensive tactics against Arsenal, but still i think we should have had more possession in the center and kept the ball a little farther than our final third in general.
