The Swedish Rumble 🔰 @swedishrumble 🚨Richard Arnold via the Athletic article today 👇. What does it mean?
1. Capital structure refers to the balance between equity (money contributed by the owners/founders) and debt. In this context, equity also includes monies generated by the business.
It’s not a term that has a specific meaning, but what I think is clear and what I think also is evident from what is going on — is that the people in charge realize that we can NOT do what Tottenham did and finance a new stadium with debt on the club’s balance sheet without a capital contribution.
2. This — is — a problem that the Glazers must deal with. Perhaps not today, OT won’t collapse in the coming 24 months. But it’s an issue that must be handled.
3. How much money do the club need? My math predicts that: 🔺If we get 1bn — we have a fighting chance, but it would be tough. 🔺1.5bn ensures that we can spend as much as anyone else. 🔺It’s hard to see a point really with contributing more than roughly 2-2.5bn to the club (you simply get to a point where the club would just make a taxable profit if you give the club too much money).
4. How can the club get more “equity”? MUFC can — easily — raise 1.5bn through a Rights Issue. The problem is that nobody will ever be willing to subscribe for shares at a 5-6bn valuation unless (a) it ensures them everything else that comes with being the majority owner of the club or (b) they get something else (like 6th Streets and co are after, like rights to part of TV revenue for the coming 25 years or whatever).
What does this mean? More debt is not the solution. Arnold more or less confirms that. But the Glazers want to stay and investors want to invest — why haven’t they signed up a minority investor yet? Simply because a minority investor would want too much from the Glazers. An investor of 1.5bn would want a lot more than 25% of the shares. It’s simply quite worthless to be a minority owner of MUFC.
👉This leaves the option that is being explored which is the Glazer handing over control of the club to someone who has the resources to contribute money to do it.

2 hours ago Quote Post Options Post by kstandhand on 2 hours ago Manchester United's board meeting on Thursday was always planned. Those close to the process point out nothing was scheduled specifically to vote on Sir Jim Ratcliffe's proposal. 12:38 PM · Oct 18, 2023 ·
Ben Jacobs @jacobsben · 3m Remains an agreement in principle over a 25% stake, but still some negotiations on overall deal, including the sporting control element. Those close to INEOS refute any 'delay' since they claim there was never a fixed timescale on when things would be ready for board approval. Ben Jacobs @jacobsben · 3m Ratcliffe would like a deal done in time for the January window. And regardless of board approval, it's a 6-8 week competition process if all legal and logistical requirements are considered. Ben Jacobs @jacobsben · 3m Sheikh Jassim's withdrawal remains "categorical". Several sources close to the group reiterate they have not left their final offer on the table. Ben Jacobs @jacobsben · 3m Those close to the process also stress no new offer was made prior to withdrawal, only further negotiations. The increase in pledged investment to $1.7bn was also not made in writing with some close to the process revealing the first time they heard that number was via the media.
