Really not to sure about the team selection on this one Dodgy pitch - risk of injury with an enthusiastic Northampton wanting to take us out - Players needing to build confidence - Players needing to score goals - a defense that needs settling Shaw definitely out, Micky expected back 24th Sept - Martial hope he's okay but I'm not sure if he needs rest or game time Jose wanted September to come to give players a run out - well it's here -------- but not as we would have liked it My team selection DDG Timbo - Bailly - Smalling - Darmian Morgan - Herrera Lingard- Mata - Martial Rashford
"Rest" the (misfiring) big guns for Leicester on Saturday I think we will win this 2 or 3 nil would be nice

Wouldn't be so quick to put the league cup down. Could actually be our best chance of a trophy this season and Mourinho's got a good record in it too. Not expecting a loss this time  hopefully we can get the job done in 90 mins. Should get a sense of the mindset early on and what kind of night we're in for. World cup final for Northampton

I'd still at this stage like us to use this competition to get players up to speed and give the youth a chance. Win here and build the confidence for Saturday getting a couple of players sharp for that match as well.
Romero
Timbo - Tuanzebe - Smalling - Riley
Carrick Schneiderlin - Herrera
Young - Rashford - Memphis
Saw Rojo was at the train station but please Jose anyone but him

I hate playing these League one teams - you never know what to expect - you can either win 5-0 or they can defend like their lives depend on it and at the end you lose 1-0 by a random goal. I think I'd go with a mix of experience and youth De Gea Mensah Smalling Blind Riley Carrick Schneiderlin Herrera Lingard Rashford Memphis Also saw that nice article: George Best stole the show when Manchester United thumped Northampton 8-2: 'We got free steaks and sherry, but Bestie put six past us' Manchester United will have superstars in abundance when they take on League One Northampton on Wednesday night — but not one can match the magic of George Best. And no performance better sums up the star quality of the Northern Ireland genius than the six goals he scored in an 8-2 FA Cup fifth-round victory over Northampton 46 years ago. Best was not even in the list of United players in the two-shilling (10p) match programme — now regularly changing hands for more than £175 online — having been out of the side while serving a four-week ban for knocking the ball from referee Jack Taylor’s hands at the end of a Manchester derby. ‘Once we knew we were going to play against United everyone came out of the woodwork,’ Ray Fairfax, the man deputed to mark Best, told Sportsmail. ‘The butcher offered us steaks free of charge, somebody supplied all the sherry, then the farmer supplied all the eggs so we were living a luxurious lifestyle while trying to build up our strength. It was a nice build-up but it didn’t pay off. ‘For Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba now, then we had Bobby Charlton, Paddy Crerand and George Best. All the names were there. At half-time it was only 2-0, but then Best spun into action and there was not a lot we could do about it from there on in. ‘He was brilliant with his speed of thought and he would always catch you unawares. When he had gone, you had to make every effort to catch him which was nigh-on impossible. ‘He made his mark by proving to the world that he was still one of the greatest players of all time and he was pretty good on that day. ‘For the final goal he took it around Kim Book the goalkeeper and just stood on the goalline, waved to the crowd and then put it into the net. It was one of those magic moments in time, even all those years ago, that nobody will ever forget.’ www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3799003/George-Best-stole-Manchester-United-thumped-Northampton-8-2.html

Hope Mou is not afraid to test youth tonight, Fosu-Mensah in particular. This Cup is not about results it's about giving chances. Still we need to progress some stages to have some opportunities for the young players.
Hope to see something like this:
Romero TFM Smalling Tuanzebe Darmian (or Riley but 2 academy players in the back 4 may be too risky) Carrick Herrera Lingard Mata Memphis Rashford
