you should be surprised that he's even on the American newspaper. Absolutely not. LKY and the USA have quite an interesting relationship, actually..... go search up Michael Fay.

I'd be surprised if there were many people who don't know where Singapore is, but I'm not surprised many don't know Lee Kuan Yew. World leaders are mentioned surprisingly infrequently in our media unless there is some serious shit going on. Everyone knows Kim Jong-un, or al-Assad, or Netanyahu, but most wont know the leaders of stable countries, major western countries aside.

What does LKY have to do with Michael Fay? Of course the American media will cover a story about an American citizen receiving punishment like that in another country. Talk about another country's leader... not going to happen.

I really value my freedom of speech, even if it means having to listen to idiots.
He's only a kid. I'm sure I've said my fair share of stupid things at a young age. And it's the internet. Politicians will never control the internet.

I'm not all 'muh freedumbs' when it comes to free speech, there needs to be some restrictions, but it's troubling when people are arrested just for criticising government.

I know young people have an understandable tendency to do stupid things from time to time (being a young person myself, I know that). But what this guy did reflects sheer insensitivity and lack of respect. He didn't simply criticise Lee Kwan Yew, he insulted and cursed him right after his death, and during a period where the entire nation is in mourning. Michael, I'm not angry at you at all, but it pisses me off whenever I see the phrase 'freedom of speech' being littered around randomly. I'll happily admit that it's an aspect where Singapore don't do so well at, but does freedom of speech give you the right to offend a religion, and make crass remarks about a dead man? Is that what 'freedom of speech' has come to? I won't bother explaining everything here, but to me, it's very clear that this lad doesn't really understand Singapore's history, and the difficulties that LKY and the nation as a whole had to suffer for large parts of the 20th century, before prosperity came about.
Eric, I remember watching a movie with him in it, and he acted pretty well. In fact, I personally know the actress who played his mother in the movie. The fact that he gained publicity having starred in a movie that did very well locally, and was directed by a well-known director in our country, could have inflated his ego and made him big-headed. You can see he articulates himself very well, so he's not actually dumb. But what he did was a very dumb thing to do. It's a real shame, really.

I'm with Monty, freedom of speech should have some restrictions. But criticising or even insulting a governmental figure, no matter how great many people thought he was or if he'd cured cancer and solved the problem of famine in Africa, should never be restricted. Sheer lunacy to arrest the guy.
