www.skysports.com/football/news/11667/9975881/manchester-united-summer-transfer-window-reviewedExtract on our new number 9 The big signing for Manchester United this summer was Anthony Martial - how did that signing come about? It is funny - a lot of people will be pointing the finger at Manchester United and saying this is a panic signing. We know Van Gaal said there would not be any panic signings and there would be something special happening. It could be that it is something special. If it is a panic signing, it is a panic that has gone back weeks and months. They have been monitoring this young man very, very closely for a long time. A lot of big European clubs have been in for him. The feeling among those clubs is that Monaco would make it into the Champions League this season and therefore they would have to wait another year. Manchester United realised as soon as Monaco tumbled out of the qualifying stages of the Champions League that was their opportunity. They have moved in very swiftly and paid big money - £36m, which is a record for a teenager in world football. But there are two signs of both his belief and the club's belief. The first is that he chose the No 9 shirt himself. He was given a number of options. That No 9 was vacated by Radamel Falcao who left having arrived this time last year. Also when you look at the add-ons, one of the add-ons involves him winning the Ballon d'Or. That might be several years down the line but Manchester United are showing their intent with a player they believe can really change things at the club.

It's a surprising one; but it's one that actually excites me. It's huge fee for such a young lad, and he certainly doesn't guarantee instant success. I would have liked to have seen the signing supplemented by the signing of a more experienced, proven striker but we haven't done that, we need to back the current lads rather than fretting about who we could have/should have brought in. I don't know a great deal about him, but from what I've heard he sounds immensely talented and as mentioned; it excites me. He'll need time, he's still very raw and there's a lot of adaptation needed but [again from what I've heard] he can add something different. Welcome to United, Martial!

I should not have looked at the comment section of that article, I was right about what I would see.

Martial options Yesterday he said he prefers the central role, but is ok playing wide too, so I'm curious where will Van Gaal play him

From LVG's comments I think he'll start out wide.

My best guess is a straight swap for Mata, that seemed to be the spot that the profile we were after (Pedro, Mane, etc.) would slot into best. Although I'm not sure how much Martial has played on the right in his time, he seems to be centre forward or left on all the videos and was on the left wing against Arsenal last season.
The No.10 position though is the only one we've changed so far this season, so Rooney there with Martial leading the line wouldn't surprise me.
I can see where the Henry comparisons would come from but from the clips I've seen he doesn't look as elegant and polished running with the ball as Henry used to. I loath to use the "next" tags but I see more of a young Benzema in the bits I've seen than anything else. Similar in stature and technique, regularly just tries to bulldoze his way through defenders.

A bit more insight on Martial Even at six, Manchester United's £58m teenager Anthony Martial just could not handle losing... Thierry Henry was the same Niakaté, who played with Henry as a child and coached Martial, believes there are great similarities between the pair. ‘Anthony arrived here at the age of six and we could see that he had already surpassed the other kids in terms of his technical skill and speed,’ he says. ‘He shared Thierry’s qualities. ‘He was incredibly determined. As is the case with every great player, he had this real hate of losing, almost a fear. He was a leader on the pitch. Even at six year old, he couldn’t handle losing. It would eat him up, he’d be angry and become isolated. Thierry was the same. He had that exact trait. It is the same behaviour, the same speed, the same quality and the same will to win. They would both be very demanding of themselves and their team-mates, both in training and games. ‘If a training session lasted an hour, he would ask for more afterwards. As soon as he left training, he’d then be on the street playing with his mates. He was incredibly precocious, his technical and physical skill was remarkable.’ www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3223644/Even-six-Manchester-United-s-58m-teenager-Anthony-Martial-just-not-handle-losing-Thierry-Henry-same.html#ixzz3l2lf2qVq

what a fantastic goal, on debut also against liverpool, pressure what pressure, he was supremely cool and composed in that movement and made skertel look foolish
now i know why we paid the money for him, if he keeps this up he will be that world class player we need

Superb goal and even besides that showed glimpses of what he'll bring. He's strong and not scared to get stuck in, quick and did anyone notice the great leap he has? Not seen anyone jump like that since Saha.
That being said, we have to be cautious. I know it's easy to get caught up in today, the occasion and the quality of the goal but this kid is 19. We can't be expecting magic like that from him every time he steps foot on the pitch.
I actually think he could turn out to be a godsend for Memphis. Take a bit of the pressure off him as the new and exciting attacking talent which could give him more freedom to produce what we know he's capable of as well.

Agreed, I didn't mind hyping him up after the goal for the fun of it but I'm still very cautious. I still think it's silly to compare him to Henry. It was only one match. We've seen many other talents diminish later on over the years
But the signs are good. Better to score on your debut than not score. He showed strength and composure - two areas we are seriously lacking in the offensive department. LVG has said that he'll ease him in since he's just a kid but I wonder if we'll see him get more minutes than expected considering our shortage in the striker department

I think he'll get a lot of football this season, just not necessarily as a number 9. He's only 19 but he's got 2 international caps and has played 1st team football at a Champions League club so he's hardly an out and out novice. I think if the kid's good enough he plays, just have to not be overly expectant. Which doesn't mean he won't be brilliant, just means we shouldn't expect constant brilliance.
I see him playing out wide more often than not this season though. When Rooney's back I could see him up front with Memphis and Martial either side of him. Mata isn't setting the world alight out wide atm and having 2 guys on the flanks with out and out pace and power is very appealing and could be what's needed to kick the attacking end of the pitch into gear and break down defences.

Remember Kiko macheda against Villa a couple of years ago? Hopefully the pressure and expectations does not get the best out of him. A good start nonetheless.
