Not sure what to make of the latest to be honest. Ed seems to be making it up as he goes along hoping that one day he'll get something right which statistics say will happen.
Is Phelan the right man for the job or is it because he's already here and won't cost a penny to bring in? We really have made a shambles of everything since Sir Alex retired (some might even say well before then) and this latest news doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
Sir Alex will never, ever be repeated so part of me thinks we have to move on. Even since his retirement the game has moved on massively so maybe we have to move on as well. Oles appointment as interim even though it came as a shock it wasn't Eds worst move he's ever made but then of course he goes and fucks it up by giving him the job before the season ends thinking at least it saves him time but more importantly money in not having to look at anyone else. Now this with Phelan.
I just don't know anymore.
Any thoughts or are people just too numb to process everything that's happened and keeps happening at our club?
Like anything with those owners, IF, it's done properly and the technical directors findings are implemented and funded properly then it's long overdue. It should have been done the moment Fergie and Gill stepped aside and made way for the fuckwit waffle-farts.
Now they've tanked the club to a dangerous level and realised they know absolutely fuck all about football or the running of. Whodafuckinthunkit!? So here we are 6 years on and no further down the line with a tired looking stadium and they're not prepared to sell to anyone who's not offering moonbeam-unicorn prices, they still want the cash-cow in their portfolio. So they look around and see what all the big boy clubs do around Europe and think we've ruined everything else, options are thin, so maybe give that one a go.
Mike's been around long enough to know all aspects of the game and long enough in the tooth to know what the Glazers are about. He'd be a great fit for the job not least because he knows all the other people involved in the club (past and present) directors included. I've seen it argued both ways about an external appointment being more autonomous and robust and willing to stand up to the Glazers 'budgeting' but I'm not sure about that. The fact it's taken this long to organise sounds like he's nailed the job description down legally, meaning he walks away if anything is reneged on.
A proper technical / sporting director is a well paid position and considerably loftier than being Ole's right hand man, certainly a lot better paying. Look, if it's done properly and whole heartedly, it's long overdue and should work a treat. You could even promote Carrick AND bring in Rene to the coaching staff if Mike takes the role. That's a formidable team right there.
Just needs the Glazers to take a back seat and fund it properly...
As I see it the club are finally making decisions with a plan and vision for the long term, sacking Mourinho, bringing in Ole as caretaker and then Phelan coming back, Carrick and McKenna within the staff. People who all have United in their blood, understand and know the history and expectations. Ole has been made permanent manager so likely this technical director role will be someone from inside given the stage of the season.
From what has been said on this matter from the club, it’s a role to oversee and connect various departments taking some of the responsibilities away from the manager and be a link between Woodward/board and the manager. Phelan is a football man well connected with United and English football, already has relationships established with Ole and the staff, he has a little bit of experience I believe from his time in Australia and many of the DOF’s at clubs are ex players/staff so it makes sense. The only concern with Phelan is he is no spring chicken so will his views and ideas be outdated.
We need to get back to our ethos and what made us successful, the club need to back Ole and Phelan’s (if he indeed gets this role) strategy and stick with it. No more scattergun approach.
You raise a good point about the nature of the job and it's description, which we have bugger all idea about yet. As always the devil will be in the detail, have to wait and see. Mike's no mug so he won't be signing up to any old shit.
